I recently installed a new temperature guage (after market) and the temp shows around 190 deg at normal loads is this near normal for a 601 series tractor 134 cid engine. Also what would be the normal temp range for operating the tractor.

I am not familaiar with a Ford 601. I will say that in general that engines run better warm. A temp of 190 is fine genarally. 200 is fine too. My Allis Chalmers WD owners manual says something to that effect. Especially for "tractor fuel", which needs a higher temperature to vaporize parperly. My 86 slant six runs best at about 200 degrees. Engines generally run better warm, and wear less too.

Tom,

You got it. The hotter you can run 'em without over heating the better.

A testament to this is the clutch hubs and electric fan motors on road vehicles. They are calibrated to come in at about 230 degrees.

Dan,

The temperature of the coolant will be directly related to the specific thermostat that you have installed in the thermostat housing at the engine end of the top radiator hose. You can buy a low temperature thermostat that will keep the coolant at about 180 degrees, a medium temperature thermostat that will keep the temperature at around 190 degrees, or a high temperature thermostat that will keep the temperature at around 205 degrees. Obviously, the exact temperature will vary from the thermostat temperature, but if the cooling system is working well, they should be pretty close.

Do you know what temperature thermostat is in the tractor?

Tom
