does anyone know how to get the generator belt off? there seems to be a fixed nut inside a groove, and then a nut directly behind the generator pulley.

If memory serves correctly, the wrench to use is a 13/16" open end on the nut that is on the fan side of the vertical upright supports. The slots in the back will not permit the back nut to turn and any undue force may break the uprights. Some spray lube such as WD-40 on the back nut threads may help the process.

The nut directly behind the pulley is the one to loosen. The second nut will be held in the groove. If the nuts haven't been loosened in awhile they may require a lot of force to loosen. Some PB Blaster will really help here.
