Motor will not start. I took the head off the low compression side and found nothing wrong with the valves. I check the spark plug gap and made sure they were at 0.030. Then I did get the tractor to run after everything was together for a few minutes. The motor then stopped dead. I took one of the spark plugs out and held it made sure it was clean, replaced it and the motor started right up. Then shut off again. Did the same thing over and over till i gave up for the night. I am using a brand new set of Champion 5861's. I wanted one of the Champions listed in the repair manual but no one had them. Could this problem be the spark plugs?

If this is the type with the diaphragm fuel pump near the carb, you might want to check if the pump is working and the diaphragm didn't tear or get clogged up with junk.

I agree with Hermit about the fuel pump. I have the same engine and it does the same. Run, stop, run, stop. Usualy is the fuel pump. Some times the diaphram gets so thin it leaks, but you can't see any holes.

1. Restricted fuel flow to carburetor bowl so fuel flow does not keep up with engine fuel consumption. Stops when gas level in carburetor bowl drops. Restart possible when carb. slowly fills back up with gas, then runs out of gas again.

2. Coil or electronic ignition failure when warm. Restart possible when component cools.

Not likely to be spark plug related.

I replaced the fuel pump and replaced the spark plugs with a Autolite 458's. Motor ran after a little gas down the throat of the carb and a jump start. Turned off and turned on many time this afternoon. Later tonight, nothing just cranked till battery became low.
