I have a problem with my Farmall A tractor keeps eating regulators. I think I have come to a conclusion right now my lights are wired directly to the hot side of the amp gauge that goes to toggle switches for my lights and if all my lights were wired to the lights post on the regulator this problem should be solved. My amp gauge shows 10amps of discharge while running with headlights on and when voltage regulator is working I show 8amps of discharge. If Iam corect I should show no discharge on my amp gauge unless Iam cranking the engine over. so therefore my lights are burning my points up in my regulator. Am I correct on this? PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Thanks
Brian

Brian,
A Farmall A with a 3 pole voltage regulator has the Batt line running to the ammeter, and that same pole of the ammeter runs to the light switch. The other pole of the ammeter runs to the batt side of the starter switch.

If you have a 4 pole regulator, which is sounds like you do, run the lights from the L or load or lights pole. That may fix everything.

If not - if you turn on the lights with the engine off, and the meter says charging, the ammeter is wired backwards, you have bad or grounded wires, or the ammeter is the problem.

If instead with lights on, engine not running and showing discharge, try a separate ground to the voltage regulator or try polarizing the regulator by brushing a wire from the Bat and Gen terminals.

If still no go, try jumpering the F or Field terminal to ground. If you still get no charge, the problem is in the generator.

Guy's As a favor to my 78 year old neighbor he ask me to look at his 1939 farmall, he bought a volatage regulator and didn't know how to wire it. the regulator has 4 leads bat, gen, f with a resistor and L. I wired it according to the diagram. Generator pole A to voltage regulator GEN, Generator pole f to voltage regulator F with resistor. Took the battery wire from tractor and put it voltage regulator terminal BAT, Took other line from tractor lights/ammeter and put it on L. battery still does noy charge. looked at ammeter while it runs does not dischage, turn on lights and ammeter drops to about 10 on discharge. Does anyone have a schematic or could help me out?

Thank You

Your amp meter might be wired up backward, or you may have your battery installed backward. Should be positive ground. Check it out.
