Still would take Dad's old JD 730. Had an 8N, JD A, B, 50, 60, 3010, 3020, 4020. Worked for another farmer runing a 4320, 4620, 7520. Still like the sound of the old 730 under load plowing.

The best by a wide margin was the D-21 series 2. It set the benchmark for big power

Where do you all think the John Deere R would fit in there? Not so good for the smaller jobs but what about the rest? If nothing else, the sound alone would put it at the top of my list. God bless.

It was the Hoyt-Claxwell.

Hope I spelled it right.

Small enough for small work. Big enough for big work and a push button switch that went from gas to diesel.

The three wheel drive allowed it to go through anything if you purchased the high flotation steel wheels option.

One that runs and gets the job done. Not enough time to keep fiddlin' with finicky rigs that don't get the job done.

The best tractor is My tractor, the days when its running good. Almost any other tractor when its giving me trouble. I think I would have to vote for the 3020/ 4020 for best.

The all time best tractor was the "Purple" tractor with the Essex Tri Directional as a close 2nd.

Possibly the 'best for it's time' and you would have a very, very good argument.

While I don't like the new plastic & flaky electronics gismos being produced, there were a _lot_ of tractors of all colors that were more capable and useful from the lat '50s through the '70s.

The JD 4020 often comes to mind as one of the best balanced, most durable, power/weight ratio, fuel efficient, etc., tractor. If one takes off the colored glasses, there are some good points there.

Without live pto or hydraulics, limited gear selection, and it's ability to flip over backwards - time has passed the N series by. A 860 built in the mid 50's beats it all to heck, far better tractor.

Now if you had asked 'for it's time' then I would agree with you.

The best tractor is the one that best does the job it's needed for. From a little Yanmar to a huge Deere, the machine best suited for the job is the best machine.

I AGREE THE 8N IS A FINE TRACTOR AND THE 3 POINT REVELUTIONIZED THE TRACTOR INDUSTRY, BUT NO POWER STEERING AND NO LIVE PTO/HYD. AND I HAVE A 1950 8N RESTORED. 4020 GOOD TRACTOR. BUT ON THE FARM WE HAD 2 OLIVER SUPER 77 DIESELS GOOD OLD TRACTORS.

Gotta agree with the others, the 4020 is by far the all time favorite. No better choice for a loader tractor than a 4020 with a powershift.

My Granddad always said "there shouldn't have been any tractor built bigger than a 4020, and 4020's shouldn't have ever had cabs or lights put on them!!!"

Just think where we'd be today if that would have happened. There would be a lot more family farms still in business.

I think the 4010 is one of my favorites, we've had one since it was new. We still use it for pto work, and the power steering on it is the best on the farm. (and no it's not the only one with power steering). I hate to diss the 8N but around where I live it's like a simptom of a diddease. First the people move out from the city, then they slap up no tresspassing signs and petition for sidewalks along country roads and buy an 8N ford, then they happily roam through your pasture and disturb your livestock because it just looks like it oughta be a public park..

I would have to also say a MF 135. Grandpa had a gas model that was great. Wish he still had it. Gotta love Oliver 88's and 77's though.

Depending on the size of the tractor, I have had many dealers tell me they can sell two or three 135 M.F. diesel tractors to any other brand, including their own brand. I don't have one now, I have a 364 I.H. and I sold my 830 J.D. last year. A few years ago, I owned a 135 for 13 years, sold it and wish I had it back. I would agree with the dealers on this size tractor.

I have always heard and have seen surveys that list the 4020 John Deere as the most popular of all time. I have had 2 of them myself and they are workhorses for sure. Last one I traded in on the 4430 I have now which I have heard was one of the most popular of its time. As far as small tractors go, I'm sure there is a niche for the N Fords but I personally see no use for them, no live pto, no power steering, very limited on what you can do with them, I'm sure they have there place though, not meaning to talk them down even though thats what it sounds like. The 135 Massey is also a very popular tractor, got one of them too along with a 3020 Deere and a 4230 Deere.

Best overall tractor would seem to be a tractor that could do about any job or fit in any situation. I guess if I had to pick just one it would be the JD 4020. If you could expand on the answer you would have to include the IH 656, 856, 1256, 1456, CaseIH 7120, 7220, JD 3020, 4230, 4440, 4450, AC 190XT, 200, Ford 7000, 8000, Oliver 1650, and some Massey's and a few others that I'm not familiar with. One tractor that would not be on the list would be the 8N Ford.

What's wrong with the 8N? Had one for 50 years and it works great to this day. Maybe others would too if they are well maintained.

I agree, the 8N is the best sentimental choice, it has been my companion since 51 years. But every "sentimental tractor" is the best tractor. The 9N/2N/8N, Fergy 20, 30, 35 were a revolution in the tractor industry. Later there was IH B-275, Fordson Dexta, MF35. Another revolution is called the JD 4020 and later the sound gard body cab... and it was just the beginning of a new era.

Well my handle on here is short for New Generation--I never met a WATERLOO BUILT new generation tractor I didn't like. I agree with Indy. to me it's a toss-up between the 4020 and the 4440.

It's hard to pick ONE tractor, considering all the different ERA's, but the 4020 diesel is still quite a tractor, 40 years after it first came on the scene. Many farms still use it as a "primary tractor". 8N, Farmall M, Fordson, and Deere 4440 all have their spot on the "list" John
