Can't comment on the Mantis but I have a Troy-bilt Horse model (pre-MTD) with B&S motor. Running the same plug, starts 2nd pull everytime. I am VERY SATISFIED. I do run with Stabil in the tank all the time to prevent gumming up the works.

We had a two stroke mini from an auction for 2 years and never did get it running right. Bought the wife a Honda 4 stroke and she just loves it. Starts great, runs great. We use a big Troybuilt horse to prep a large garden and she takes over from there. A four stroke is normally much easier to keep running well and think of how many old Honda quads and motorcycles you see around.

I've used a Mantis with the 2 stroke motor. I really didn't like the noise and smoke. Now you can buy the Manis with a Honda or even an electric motor.

But, why pay more for the Mantis name, when you can buy a mini Honda right from Honda. That's what i did, and it was cheaper. Honda uses the same worm drive tranny, and of course the same motor too, so only the tines are slightly different, and i can't see any difference in how they work.

If i need service, i can take it to a Honda dealer, and they are all over!!!

I use a Howard Rotavator to break the ground first, and use my mini Honda for weeding ect..

Dick,

I bought one for my wife last spring. It was the one with the Honda 4 stroke engine. I did not want to have her mistakenly use a can of gas that was not mixed, so the 4 stroke made a lot of sense. Plus since it is a Honda, it starts easily and should last forever. It is kind of loud like all small engines, but we always use earplugs anyway. It works great! I can't say enough good things about it. She uses it whenever she wants to transplant something - she just fires it up and uses it to dig a hole. The dirt is just pulverized. That may be the only down side to it - the dirt can get pulverized to a powder if you aren't careful. She likes the powdered dirt better than clumps.
Get one, you won't regret it.

Finally something I can comment on. Had a competitor unit for a year and a real mantis for about 6 years now. For working up a new bed a full sized tiller is nicer but with an established bed these things work well. Easy to start and surprisingly effective with close in weeding and things like that. Hard clay here in new beds and it will even chew that up if you have the time to let it work. I always use 89 octane stabilized fuel with quality oil and don't have any trouble with it. Big rocks have to be hand removed but most other things it'll chew up.

My wife wanted one so bad because her mother has one that has been used hard for four seasons with no problems. I thought by looking at the mantis, it would be to small for anything, but I was convinced to try it and I was very impressed! The tines are very aggresive and it has plenty of power; also is easy to start. Here in Northeast MO , all we have on the hills is hard nasty clay and it will tear through it. The best part of it all is that the wife can start it and use it, so husband can do more important things like sip barley-pop on the porch!

I have the small troybilt with Tecumseh engine. Struggled for a long time to get it not to stall when deep in the dirt. Fiddled with the throttle cable attachment until I finally got it right. Now runs like a top. Mix small amounts of gas and run it all out.

For established beds, Mantis is the tiller of choice around here. I borrowed one every year until my mother gave me hers. At 92, she finally found it hard to start. Problem wasn't with the Mantis. Far as I can see they're THE answer.

Father-in-law had a Troybilt,. It was so aggrevating, it earned the name of"tiller from h*ll! Impossible to keep it running for more than 15 minutes.

In the family we've had both Mantis, and Troy Bilt. The two strokers were not very reliable, but the last one, a Troy Bilt (pre the MTD buyout) has the Honda 4 stroke engine and has run flawlessly for 3 seasons now. The biggest thing we've done to help our tillers and lawn equipment that don't run much is to run stabilized gas in them ALL the time so it never varnishes up. The gas you buy now is (horse manure).

My dad got one when they first came out, it was junk. Ran for 1 year and hasn't run since. It was a Mantis by the way

Well like I said that was when they first came out, it had an echo 2 cycle on it and was in the shop more then in the garden. The newer ones maybe better. I tried to fix it this summer and found out that they don't make parts for that engine anymore. Thought about rigging a drill motor on it just so my wife could play in the garden. But I didn't figured she would cut the cord and get mad at me
