I checked and made sure that the tappet clearance for all 4 valves were correct in my Briggs 16Hp twin. They are all within the specs in the repair manual. The engine has a loud tap now when I got it started. I do not understand. Was the tap created by the clearance or something else?

If you can, insert a feeler gauge into the gap when the engine is running, see which one gets quiet when you do. this is the problem one. Look for the problem. Worn parts, not set at proper rotation of engine, sticking valve maybe.

Does the engine have hydraulic lifters ? Some do and I have heard that they ( Kohlers in particular) are sensitive to the oil used.

Tweeter, re-check your settings. Maybe you did not have the engine turned to the proper point when you adjusted one of them?

Might depend on how they are set. Using a feeler guage doesn't take into account any wear on the components. A dial guage might be needed or repair /replacement of any worn components.

The first place to check is to reset the clearences. Did you reset them after a through warmup also? I've seen this happen and found that one pushrod was not seated when the valves were adjusted too.

It said in the repair manual to adjust the clearance while COLD.
