Question on ROPS That Saved Lives

As we are fast approaching the family Christmas festivities I’ve had a chance to reflect on all of the blessings my family and I have received this last year. One significant blessing was for my wife and I to be able to walk away from what could have been a fatal accident this summer. We were traveling on a city expressway when an 18-wheeler tractor/trailer blew a front left tire and careened across four lanes of traffic pitching us into the concrete highway divider. I credit the safety features of the car for saving both my wife and myself. She has some bruises and strains; I had no more than two small air bag burns on my wrists.

Reflecting on that experience brought me to Rollover Protection (ROPS) for my tractor. I’ve seen postings on unfortunate accidents where tractor operators were crushed in rollover accidents because they didn’t have ROPS. Does any one have experience (or know of an experience) that they are willing to share where they did have a rollover and survived because of the ROPS? I have a Ford 860 without ROPS but am seriously considering putting one next summer. Most of the postings I’ve seen from the archives are for ROPS plans/sources/availability. One posting said it saved him but didn’t elaborate. I’d like to hear about the experiences of others.

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Check past posts with the search. I walked away alive and intact except for my pride after rolling an excavator into a ditch this past fall. ROPS and a firm seat belt saved the day.

After seeing that picture I would like to hear the rest of the story.

A few years ago ('98 or '99) I was raking hay with a 2090 Case (I know, I know 105 hp is a little much for a rake but it sure is nice to avoid the bumble bees). Saw a pc of wood and wanted to make darn sure that it didnt get picked up by the rake so I was looking back a little longer than usual. Got too close to the creek bank and when I made a sharp left turn creek bank gave way from an undercut. Tractor rolled to the right over and into the creek. Went over 1 full time and stopped with the stub axle jammed in the ground. I was in a full ROPS cab with a seat belt on. Didnt have the belt good and tight. When it stopped I had come completely out of the belt and my head was under the dash, feet in the air, and was covered in broken glass. I walked away from it, got a (large) tow truck, and was running again in 2 hours (didnt use the tractor the rest of the day but I needed my rake). If I hadn't had roll over protection I might or might not still be here. We are in a dnagerous line of work, any risk that you can reduce (like a ROPS) is well spent.

While I can not elaborate because my nerves will get to me I will say this.

I have been around equiptment one form or another all my life. From farm tractors to very heavy construction and to tractor trailers.

PLEASE put a ROPS and the best seat belt you can find on your tractor. You have to have both for it to work.

Do not take the out that some say "it gets in the way while mowing under trees.

have a merry christmas
