Just wondering what percent of those posts do you guys think really mean: "Its for sale-at some price or other."

I figure the guy wants to sell it and needs to know what to ask or else he just bought it and needs us to tell him he got a bargain! lots of stuff changes hands here and I have bought and sold things myself. The same thing happens on ebay; someone will email me and ask if I have such and such part as they noticed I had other pieces for that model. Of course it helps that my ebay ID is a tractor model! Another thing that helps is if more guys would get a throwaway email account and unhide it in their post.

In the matter of something for sale I can understand using the classified section and agree that stuff for sale should be put on there. If I have something to sell and want to advertise it I would ecpect to pay if that service was provided wether it was on here or in one of the Trader papers, E-bay, etc. When it comes to parts though, in reality, how many of us actually make it a habit go to the classified section to see if anybody is looking for parts. True if I have a part for or a whole XYZ tractor I am actively trying to sell and somebody is looking specifically for parts for or a whole XYZ tractor then they may post in the parts wanted ad and I would see them there and maybe sell them my parts or tractor. The thing is how many times do you think there is somebody looking for a specific part and somebody that just happens to have that specific part on here at the same time that is actively trying to sell it. If your actively trying to sell it then you should be posting on the for sale section yourself. Usually when somebody is looking for parts they simply post in the discussion section and ask where they can get parts. I don't see anything wrong with that, in factI don't think there is any topic more discussed in everyday life, off this board, than where to find parts to keep our old machines running. Posting in one of the regular boards is the most likely way to get the most responses and if somebody just happens to see the post and has the needed part lying in the corner of the barn all but forgotten, then by all means they shouldn't have to feel bad for helping the person out. That's what these boards are supposed to be about, and if you can't do that then what good are they????? Just my .02

If you read these forums regularly, you will see a million (maybe I'm exaggerating) ways of disguising a classified ad on the discussion forum. Your example would be just one of those many ways. It suprises me that guys post ads here even though the webmaster asks very clearly not to when the post is made.

I posted a question last week about my neighbor's WD Allis Chalmers that was actually for sale, but I wasn't trying to advertise for him--I wanted to know what the AC guys thought it was worth as were considering buying it. My son and I caught "old iron fever" about a year and a half ago and we're definitely still learning. I don't understand what the problem is about asking for tractor values--does it cost money to post on the photo ads or classified section and people are posting "disguised ads" on the discussion forums to get a free ride? Guess I must be missing something....

You and others have made some good points. In my opinion, there are three good reasons why ads shouldn't show up here. One, the webmaster (Kim) obviously doesn't want them here and she makes it pretty clear when I post something (and of course guys claim they don't see the friendly reminder). She owns the website (which is essentially free unless you choose to be a voluntary subscriber) and therefore she gets to make the rules. If I don't like the rules then I don't have to visit here. Second, I see this morning there are 1600 ads in the classifieds. The reason for Kim's request should be obvious, ads plug up the discussion forum. Third, a discussion forum is a discussion forum and not a classified ads section. I think it's pretty simple, sort of like a seatbelt or speed limit rule, but there will always be some of us breaking the rules.
