I am working on a 3 cyl perkins. The crank is Std., and with new main bearings I have .004 clearance when properly torqued, which I think is a little loose. Does any one have a trick to get a little less clearance. Thanks, Stan

The Massey Ferguson service manual calls for a Main Bearing Clearance of 0.003 to 0.005 Rod Bearing Clearance of 0.0025 to 0.004 I have saw them run with 0.006 clearance.

After I posted this I found my manual, and the mains are .003 to .005. I first thought this was a little excessive, but If I am at .004. I guess I am ok. Maybe diesels are a little looser. I have done several gas engines, and they are a little tighter. This is my first diesel. Thanks for the reply

I'm guessing that the proper clearance would be .002" - .003". And I can only guess, since you did not post the model # of the engine.

If your crank is not out of round too badly (as determined with a micrometer), you could use .001 UNDERSIZE bearings.

PISTONS FOR A WORN OR REBORED BLOCK ARE "OVERSIZE".

BEARINGS FOR A WORN OR REGROUND CRANK ARE "UNDERSIZE"!

If you are using plastigage I would check in four places 90 degrees apart. You might be able to buy and use oversize bearings. Then again you might need to grind the crank to except oversize bearings.

It's:
accept vs except
Camaro vs Camero
Electra-Glide vs Electo-Glide
(common words in ads that are spelled incorrectly)
good luck
