I have a Super M,and 2 Ms that I changed over to 12 volts, and have never had any problems with 6 volt starters. Been like that for about 10 years now.

Buy a one wire alternator. They are usually rebuilt GMs. They cost me $35 in Western , Pa. Remove the generator, regulator and the wiring. Flip the generator bracket upside down and grind the bracket on theright top, to allow the alternator to touch the oil cover. Get a piece of all thread slighly longer than the generator mounting bracket.
Drill out the holes to accomodate the all thread.
Attach the alternator using the all thread. Run one wire back to the amp gauge, but reverse the direction thru the gauge. Buy a block Chrysler resistor for the points to knock the voltage down to 6 volts. They cost about $3. Put in a 12 volt battery and hook it up negative ground. Change your lights or light bulbs to 12 volt and you are good to go. By flipping the old generator mounting bracket over you can still use the old belt. I have done many of these and it really isn't hard after the first one.

Keep her 6 volt if you can. I found some battery cables from Fleet Farm that are for trucks. These things are thick as thick as your thumb. Only cost 5 or 6 bucks each. Cranks my H like a dream.
You put big cables on aclean contact you will have no problems. You could also put a 8 volt battery with out making any alternator changes at all. Still want big cables though.

Charlie, i agree with Abane n Allen, also the alternator will require some horsepower to spin her over when they are chargi'n a few years ago i purchased all the six volt generators that this shop had as they were converti'n over to alternators for five bucks a piece! and some of em had regulators on em, what a deal! i think i got about a dozen of em

Before you convert to a 12 volt system , have someone to fine tune your 6 volt system and try to keep it that way.I buy and sell old tractors and tractors converted to 12 volt aren't worth near as much as the original 6 volt. Some years back I bought a Super C and had it converted over to 12 volt and it's very hard on the starter. I've had the starter redone about 3 times in 10 years.I'm thinking about switching it back to 6 volt.Just an opinion!!!!

Well spoken Charlie,

I agree; if it is 6v, leave 'er that way and repair any difficulties that you are having with the original system.

Nothing looks worse than a cobbled up alternator setup hanging on a classic tractor.

6 volt light bulbs will work for a short while on 12 volts and then fry.....same with the starter. It's just a little tough on 'em.

Just my opinion,

Allan

the best thing to do is get yourself a one wire altenater at your local parts store about 65.00 and adapt some brackets and run wire to amp meter thats hooked to battery

Also, I forgot to mention, replace your 6 volt with an 8 volt battery.Just don't use your lights with the engine not running, sometimes it will burn them out.
