The left rear axle shifts forward and backward on an H tractor I recently purchased. My best guess, before tearing it down, is that the final bull gear bearing left loose and dropped parts between the gear and housing thus causing the cracked housing. This tractor also has an M & W hand clutch which may or may not be a factor. I have had some successful experiences welding cast but have never attempted IH or Farmall cast. Does anyone have any successful weld jobs on this type of repair.

I had my H transmission housing cracked due to some water in it and it froze. I found a good welder who really knew how to weld cast and if I put some paint on the area no one would ever know. The right person can do it.

I have an H transmission housing that was cracked under the bull gear. It was welded up at local welding shop and is holding up fine.

I had the same event to happen a few years ago, What happens is there are about 10 case hardened bolts in the large drive gear and 1 or 2 of them break and fall to the bottom and wedge and then crack the housing, it was welded as you can weld just a couple of inches and wait for it to cool or you can drill a hole at each end of the crack and put a screw in the drilled holes after seam is welded. I can't remember exactly but and I.H. dealer charged $3.50 or 4.00 apiece for these bolts and that was about 15 years ago.

I just recently welded a hole in the block of a perkins 3 cyl diesel from my MF 231. The previous owner ran it out of oil. I was a 3 inch hole. I made a patch out of cast iron from another motor block. I used a cast rod where no pre heat is necessary. In my case it worked good. Every one I talked to had a different idea on welding cast. Isn't it funny how you never see the problems on a recent purchase until you get home. I bought a JD 5020 the first year had to replace the clutch input shaft seal. This year it is sitting in the field with a broken axle.

I repaired the rear axle bull gear case on an M by bending a steel plate into the curve of the outside of the housing, drilling the plate and tapping the housing for short bolts then bolting the patch to the outside of the housing using a thick gasket between the plate and housing. Still going strong.
