Seems like every time I go to an auction for a specific item, there are two or three guys that want it worse!
Went to an auction today for a glenco 9 shank soil saver. Checked Iron search and one listed in S. IL for $3200.00 from a dealer.
I put my top price at $2900.00. Passed that b4 I could raise my hand. A guy from S. IL paid $3750.00!!
There, I'm done...thanx, Larry

You know it is hard to say what an item might has went for if you don't bid. By that I mean I missed an auction the other day where there was a tractor I was interested in an it went $2,000.Wow that was cheap. But you don't know where the bidding would have stoped unless you where in the guys mind and know where he would have stopped at. The tractor went for $2,000 well all that means is the stoping point for one of the bidders. But it dosn't nesaseraly mean the the winner wouldn't have gone to $3,000 or maybe $4,000 before he stoped bidding. So when somone tells me awww you should have been there everything was going cheap. You don't really know if the thing you wanted would have gone cheap if you would have been bidding

Larry, I have an 11 shank Glenco SoilSaver settin' out here in the shed (always shedded). If I get out of farmin' here soon, it may be for sale pretty quick. Along with several other pieces of equipment and a couple of tractors. I'm considering other employment and just waiting for the right opportunity right now. We used to pull the SoilSaver with the 2 outside rear shanks removed because the IH-1066 would not pull it. But when I got my IH-1566 I put the shanks back on.

I have been screwed at auctions before and also found some real bargains. Anymore, I take pen and paper and "scope-out" the equipment ahead of the start of the sale. I start calculating (on each item that interests me) in my head what price would be a decent price, what price would be close to the limit, and what price I'll walk away. Then I define it down to buying price... and walking price. Then when the item comes up... I already have my exact "stop limit" picked out... and I stick to it!!!! It makes the auctioneer rather mad when no matter how he coaxes I abruptly stop bidding, and will not start bidding again till the next item. I had one auctioneer that pointed at me and accepted a bid... that I did not make (right after I quit because of the limit)! He knew that I was not bidding because I shook my head side-to-side in a definite, "NO!" as I started to turn away. My buddy said, "Did you just bid? 'Cause he just called your bid!" I walked away from the auction and would not go back!

There is always another bargain somewhere else. Many an item has been bought at an outragously high price at auction by emotional bidders.

Hi Chris,
That's exactly what I do. Check out dealer prices, new and used b4 I go, then set a stop limit that I NEVER break. I've got a White 4-180, wasn't sure if it would pull 11 shank thru the clay hills.
Give me a caal, my e-mail is uncovered. Larry

Hey Larry, I don't see how to get ahold of your email to contact ya... so I will address you here. I am trying to see if my email will be open to you by filling it in this reply. I hate to spell it out here in the body of the message, incase some "search 'bot" software tries scanning this forum, to add any "addies" to some junk spam. If this doesn't work I will try another route to contact ya!.

An auctioneer once told me that one should never be too proud of anything you purchase at an auction because you just paid more than anyone else there thought it was worth.

there is a bargain at every auction, you just have to clever enough to be waving your hand when it goes through the ring

There are still deals to be had at almost any auction, but you must know when to quit and how much the item you are bidding on is actually worth and stick to it. I find that even at an auction where people are going crazy, there will always be something that goes cheap, like haying equipment in the winter, things that people don't need right then sometimes go cheap, but they'll later be kicking themselves for not buying after they price it at the dealer in the spring. You sure can be pround of your purchase for example if you bought something for $2,400 that a dealer up the road wants $5,000 for, you did alright wouldn't you say?.

Auctions are funny. People get competitive and caught up in the action and bid more than they would have paid had it been setting on the side of the road with a for sale sign on it. If no one else is particularly interested, they may not even bid on it.

And some times the shoe is on the other foot. Saw A MF 135 industral diesel in a flyer. The auction was 200 miles away and it was the only thing I saw that I would have been interested in so I decided not to regester or go. I watched the sale online and it seemed to run OK with no smoke as they drove it across the block. I about fell out my chair as I saw it sell for $1250.00

It sold for $1250 because you weren't there. I agree that we tend to bid more than we should getting caught up in it and all.

What chaps me about auctions is the bumpers and sometimes the bumper is the one running his mouth.

I was out to get a bull one day and one (nice one) came into the ring and the "whatamIbidimmaimmmagimmeadime....." started ranting and had no responses. So, I said what the heck so I kicked in for several bids while the price was right and after several the price started moving up enough I decided to stop bidding and wait for the one I wanted.

Well pilgrims, all of a sudden the bidding came to a screeching halt. Seems the second bidder he would look at after getting a response from me .....get this....was a phantom.

So after catching him at his game, he looked at me and said do you want the bull, and I said the other guy had the last bid. Do you want the bull? Ok I'll take it..... ..... ...sold. Gave $950 for a 2 yr old Reg. Brangus.

I embarrassed an auctioneer a couple years back. Thought I had noticed a few "phantom" bids on the items. Came to a balanced head IH mower that I had called about and he knew I was interested. He backed the bidding all the way up to $50.00 when I finally waved my hand. went up real quick to $150 (still well below market) when I stopped - my wife even gave me a poke, she knew I planned on going up to $300 on it. The auctioneer about choked and pointed at a guy in the crowd and said "SOLD". The man backed up saying he wasn't bidding. The auctioneer turned back to me saying it was his mistake and asked if I would take it for my last bid, I told him I'd take it on my first bid. He wouldn't do it and restarted the bidding. Took it home for $50.00.

I know they are out to get the best price for their seller, but they look awfully bad if they're too lazy to even use a shill in the crowd.

I have seen that so many times - tho usually a real person is shilling. I think that should be illegal! If the guy having the auction wants to buy it because he can get more money elswhere, fine. But to have fake bidders sucks. I think most auctions have fake bidders.

Against the law here in Oregon, auction can pay a heavy fine and loose their licence. falls under ORS.698.650 (2)

I once went to an auction that had signs posted everywhere that bid -rigging by buyers was a felony, & they would prosecute anyone caught doing it. It seems to me that them having shill bidders is worse than 2 guys agreeing not to bid against each other..... ....

Went to an auction about 5 months ago. There was a JD 720 diesel rowcrop there.Pony was stuck, transmission wouldn't go into all gears, and it was beat up pretty bad. Sold for $8750!!! Even the auctioneer said,"Getting a little high, ain't it boys"

I know what you mean. Good friend of mine retired back in the 70's, had all JD stuff, and kept it all nice. Prices were crazy high, especially when they auctioned the JD battery charger. The auctioneer finally said,"I'm selling this cause the price is $5.00 over what you can buy a new one for, if any of you boys want one, I'll get as many as you want" Lots of red faces!!

Nothing special. Row crop, pony start, sheet metal poor. They pulled it to start it because the pony was froze. The transmission would only go in three gears-- would not go into anything on the left side of the shift pattern. It was leaking coolant at the water pump, and was also leaking fuel.I have no idea why it sold so high. The auction was an estate auction. Maybe the tractor had some sentimental(sp) value to the two guys bidding on it. I do know that there were quite a few people shaking their heads when it was all over.

I go to as many auctions as time permits. I have developed a "stratagy". If I go with the purpose of buying a specific piece of equipment, it always sells too high. I just go, and watch for bargains. There's always that one item I want, but I never "plan" on getting it. A couple weeks ago, I broke that "rule". There was this 4440 at auction. I wanted it. It ended up selling for $6000 more than I was willing to go. Bargains just happen. John
