I've started a thread on Tractor Tales, that's a "poll" on O.T. threads, and if they should be allowed. Go over to "Talers" and weigh in on the subject, if you have a thought. Thanks. John

Allowed? That's what the moderators decide. I for one have never been bothered by any of the OT threads. If I'm not interested, I scroll past. Sometimes, not often, I'll read it later if those I know and have come to respect here chime in.

I'm gonna be guilty of it by posting right now, but have ya'll ever noticed that the OT subjects are always the ones that draw the most responses? Funny thing is most of the responses are complaining about how much space the OT posts take up even though most are only a short paragraph or so long. What takes up all the space is everybody writing in these novel long messages telling the other guys how much space their taking up and how they don't want to read what they have to say. I've said it before and I'll say it again, a "sterile" board would be so boring it isn't funny. So the best thing to do is for everybody to just quit bitc-ing and don't read it if you don't want to. There are those of us out there that enjoy things just like they are, and who's only complaint is all the whiners. Just my .02

Who is complaining ? This thread is a complaint about someone else complaining about their OT posts. I guess everyone is complaining, that is one reason OT posts get so much attention, everyone likes to complain :)

BTW this is OT :)

This invites more control by the web manager(s) thereby relieving personal responsibility for selecting subjects of interest to the reader. It seems to be working well as it is. Leave it alone. Pete

You guys _do_ realize there is quite a bit of moderator control here already, or this place would be a real junk pile? This thread is here (I'm guessing) in responce to several messages that showed up last nite, one begging for handouts, one about cancer, and one about off-topic messages. You will see more of those type of messages late at nite or on the weekend when the moderator is not around. For an example of what no moderation does to a web site, go to www.farms.com & check out their (mis-named) 'chat' area, and see what happens. That used to be as active as this place 3 years ago...

Now, I respect your opinion & am not telling you what to think - I just hope you realize how bad things get without moderation, & how many people go away - when there is _no_ moderation. :)

I've been, for the most part, a regular here since I found the site, 9 months ago. I have found, among other things, some of the most knowledgeable people that I'm apt to run across in a days time. I"m sure many others think the same. So, why should I, or anyone else, limit their questions to JUST tractors. If I know someone has a "better than average" ability, or skill, or knowledge in a given subject, I might want to know what they think about many subjects. Isn't it in everyone best interest to learn from whom ever will pass on their experience's. No one want's to turn this into "Trivia Corner". Just that occasional "question to a few friends. John

John: I just made note of the fact you came here nine months ago. I have been around here for close to 5 years now, about 3.5 of them active in discussions. This site has improved continually in that time. The management have, through tools like disclosure been able to weed out a lot of undesirable content. I think Kim has done an excellent job of moderating these forums.

You will never eliminate off topic discussion. The guys on these forums have for the most part become friends. And when people have problems, they quite often discuss it with their friends. I have met some very close friends on here, some that have driven quite few miles to visit with me personally and I have done a bit of the same. Now, because of time I usually don't wander too far from Implement Alley or the Farmall pages. If someone wishes to catch up with me on an off topic or personal matter, easiest thing is go to one of those pages.

I always post my e mail address, I think everyone should. That excuse that you get spam, etc. is a crock. I don't get enough unwanted e mail per week to take more than 5 min of my time. I'm willing to bet no one posts anymore than I do, on any of the boards. If everyone were required to post their e mail, I suggest a lot of this off topic material would never see the forums. Having said this, I will also tell you I deal with more personal e mails everyday relating to problems with farm equipment, than I do on forums. Most of it comes from names we never see on these forums. The audience on here is quite large. I have also never deleted and e mail from anyone who discloses the farm tractor or equipment titled subject he or she wishes to ask about. It doesn't matter who they are, they will get a responce. Number one I always encourage them to become active at YT, and many of them have. Many are much too shy, afraid someone may laugh at their non knowledge on the subject or worse still someone may argue with them. So if anyone sends me and e mail without subject included in a title, down comes the finger on the delete button. If I have not answered someone that precisely is the reason why.

'''''''You will see more of those type of messages late at nite or on the weekend when the moderator is not around''''''''
I dont think this happens at all. I have looked for something to read on weekends and I guess so many people are out doing stuff that theres nothing to read for long spells to sometimes all weekend. All the other ones showed up this morning. I personaly like off topics because it brings a little interest to this place. It had become sanitary here after all the fighting a couple years ago and it was about the most boring site on the internet. Im interested in car problems, house building, the occasional medical problem,,,,, ,,thats life. I was even curious were the equipment wanted discussion was going to.
