All my tractors are running fine, but a skunk has wintered in a crawl space under the farmhouse. Don't want to put poison down - might get the dogs.
Are there any natural scents - e.g. coyote that might scare em and make em move out? Wife is getting antsy which means I could be in trouble if I don't get skunk out soon.

Here's what I did about 10 years ago. Having been a hobby trapper, I had several "leg hold" traps available. I placed a few sardines on the trip pan with a short rope attached to the chain. Set the trap just insided the access point to the crawl space and waited. Unfortunately I did this on New Years eve when the wife and I were going out to celebrate. Came home that night to quite a comotion going on in the crawl space. (About 1:30 in the morning). Loaded the shot gun and went out to dispatch varmit. (Pretty dark out that night). Grabbed the rope and pulled till I got skunk just outside and started running with loaded shot gun in one hand and dragging skunk in the other. I knew that if the skunk couldn't get his footing, he could'nt spray. Forgot about the utility pole in my path and ran right into it. Okay here I am on the ground with loaded gun in one hand and skunk in other. The skunk is no longer living and I'm sure you guys can fill in the blanks from here as well as the moral of the story. I'm sure there is one.

mix baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and liquid soap don't remember the mix. Look up with your search engine for skunk neutralizer.

Stop feeding them and they will leave. You may think you're not feeding them, BUT, dogfood, catfood, table scraps, tea or coffee grounds, potato peelings, ANYTHING. They are there because of the food source believe it or not. Been there...

My sister called last fall in a panic. Skunk had taken up residence under the porch at her house. Bright lantern beam at night, 1-240 grain .44 Special hollowpoint and end of skunk troubles. No spray, no mess, bullet can stay in the ground. I had her move the cat food dish indoors. Don

Box trap works. Bait it with sweets. A 22 shot behind the skull will likely let you off spray- free. Shoot him & get him out of trap quick!

Moth balls! A few hands full thrown in the crawl space and it will leave. skunks can`t stand the smell. RT

Tried mothballs once. Never again. Haven thrown them to far. It was difficult getting them backout so we could continue to live in that house. I like the amonia idea better. That'll fade away faster than a yrs worth of mothballs.
My penny`n'1/2's worth.

Sounds to me like you could just as well poison the dogs. If they were worth a darn, you wouldn't have any varmints around your place. I remember a stage when we was without a good farm dog. Skunk moved in under the house. Dang thing I am sure was eating the cat food. We would never the less see it stiring around in the yard from time to time. We kept a loaded gun handy, and shot the thing the first chance we got. Good thing too, because after we had killed it and looked at it close, it had something wrong with it. I don't know if it was rabies or what, but it had a perty sick look to it. Didn't have the skunk smell anymore either.

We had one under the lake house one spring and I stood watch about 30 feet from his exit, just after sundown(kinda dusky)he came wandering out, I gave him a 410 dose of #6 and tossed him in the trash, no spray, no odor.

Good luck

Several years ago, after I had a skunk "blow" in a crawlspace, I was told by a professional house cleaning and restoration person to use a garden sprayer to spray dilute chlorine bleach everywhere I could get to under there. I don't remember the amount to dilute it that he suggested.

I got set up, and crawled under with the sprayer, and as I crawled around a concrete pillar, I came face to face with Mr, (or Ms?) skunk! He (she?) didn't spray, but I must have set the world's record for scooting out of a crawl space!

The bleach did help the oder, and the skunk moved on.

If the skunk has spayed under the house, you will never get rid of the smell, you will get used to it, but when visitors come, they can smell it. Set a live trap outside of the skuttle hole and bait it with a can of tuna fish. Then shoot him while in the trap. Good luck.

Been there and done that,
BLT
