Cat II inplements with a Cat I hitch

Can this be done? I bought a IH 504 a few weeks ago. It has a Cat I hitch. I wanted to hook up a 7' bush hog, but the ones I have seen are Cat II equipment.

The 504 should have enough power for the mower and the 7' just about matches the width of the outside of the rear tires. Besides, I have other things to do than groom pastures.

TIA,

Kirk

Kirk: I suspect your 504 came from the factory with either or on Cat I or II. I briefly had a 504 that came with a farm. It had Cat II ends on the hitch. I suspect it was ordered that way as the buyer of it new bought a 504 and 656 in same deal. 656 was standard Cat II. I doubt if it would be very hard to find a set of Cat II ends today. Some tractors you can just turn the ball crossways and it will pop right out and you put the others in.

Thanks Hugh,

The manual states that the hitch is Cat I. I have read your 504 story in other places on this forum.

I am pretty sure I can rig something to get this to work, just looking for the most reliable/easiest/cheapest method.

Thanks,

Kirk

Kirk: I do remember 504 having Cat II, but I do forget the type of setup. My 656 had the telescoping type end and were quite easy to change the end section of the lower link. Does your 504 have that? I suspect early 504 were solid and later models were telescoping end, but don't remember for sure. You can buy complete weld on ends for these, if you don't have replacable ends.

I like this idea. Can you get a picture or something to give me some ideas for fabrication or purchase.

TIA,

Kirk

what Ray P. said is right. i also have a catI/catII hitch on my ford 4000. you will need longer hitch pins on the implement as the ball on the lift arms won't accomadate the standard pin.

The previous owner of mine removed the factory Cat I ends and welded Cat II ends on the 3pt arms. I think it works great - I can use the bigger bushhog and I just use the Cat I-II adapter bushings on the Cat I implements. I don't know if that's a common practice or not - but I suppose it's an option.

Should work as long as your tractor has the horsepower. Just change your Cat II pins to Cat1 on the implement.

Some 3pt hitch assemblies on the tractors have two sized holes in the balls - one cat I, the other cat II. I use a cat II disk on my Farmall 200. Works OK!
