When I shut down my MF, with a diesel, with the fuel shut off lever, and dont turn off the key the batt drains because the battery hot wire is still connected to the alt. and drains the battery over night.None of the indicator lights are in the system, so there is no drain there. I am not a electronic wiz but is it possible to put a diode in the system, which I believe lets current travel only in one direction? I know just turn the key off when I shut it down. About the only thing I dont forget is supper time.

Stan it all depends on how your system is wired and what all the key turns on and off.
If you only have the excite wire for the alternator and a hot wire for the start button like I do; you could start tractor and let it run for a few seconds then turn the key off. It will continue to run and the alternator will continue to charge with key off. Then you would just kill it with the fuel shut off when you are ready.
If you have any gauges they would need to be mechanical for this to work. Any electrical gauges and lights would not work with this system.
As I said depends on what the key controls but this system has worked well for me.

Stan, if your alternator is a 2 wire type rather than a single wire one, the exciter circuit is draining your battery. A diode will not work in that lead because the current has to be able to flow from the key switch to the alternator to make it charge.

I don't know what other models, but MF 275's were built with an oil pressure switch to shut everything off when the diesel was shut down.

go to the auto parts store or MF tractor dealer and get a MF start switch that will only start and not stay on. i have one on my ford 4000 and when i turn the key switch and start the key automatically goes back to straight position like it was before the key was inserted. these are common on generator/alternator conversion tractors like older fords and MF's and other brands. it is just a two positon switch. either off or start. nothing else like accessory or prove out position.

Stan, best if you learn to turn off the key. With the key in the "on" position, there are several possible drains, such as gauges, which in my MF work off the key. I avoid this by keeping the tractor keys on a key ring, in my pocket.

On some 12 Volt conversions that I have done, I use an oil pressure switch that shuts off the "excite" current to the alternator when the engine is shut down and there is no oil pressure.

It would seem likely, though, that with the key on, some warning lights, or gauges, would also be powered up?

Bob:

Would the oil pressure switch be a 'normally open' type? Thanks.

Yes, normally open, two terminal, closes at 4-7 PSI.

don't know much about MF systems but it is possible that there is a power drain in the solenoid for the starter or it is draining power through the alternater.i know on the older cats you could leave the master switch on for days and not kill the battery and they were shut off with a fuel shut off.maybe check the solenoid and alternater.hope i was of some help

Stan, how about hooking up a reversing beeper to your oil pressure circuit via a relay, this way it will remind you to turn off the key when youre done. cheers!
