I have a chance to purchase a 1988 J.D. 1050. It has 1900 hr and the guy tells me there is a knock in the motor. He tells me the knock is becuase of a slipped bearing.

Is this expense to replace? Even if it is worst, what am I looking at for replacing the motor, 3K to 5K?

3K to 5K plus the purchase price still puts this tractor at a great price compared to the others I looked at.

Where woudl I buy a motor for this tractor? J.D. dealer.

Thank you for your help.
Norm

If that's all it is,you can pull the engine, have the crank turned put in undersize bearings and replace a rod if needed and gaskets and seals for about $850 if you do the work yourself.Check it out closely,I've had some with a bad injector that causes a similar knock. But since you really don't know what you will find, figure on $1500-$2000 in case the crank has to be welded up,block hot tanked and the oil pump replaced, and any other surprises you find.I have 2 in the shop now with spun bearings,750 with 1000 hrs,and a 950 with 1320 hrs. Both are sludged up from a combination of using the cheapest car oil wal-mart sells,(by the owners admission) and overheating. Both radiators are plugged with grass clippings. If you don't want to rebuild, you can find the Yanmar engines on e-bay for $1500 up for used and around $3500-4000 for new ones.

Wow! Excellent! Even better than I though. I can do this work myself except for I have never worked on a tractor. I have always rebuilt car engines before. Thank you! I think I’ll give it a shot.
