I have 18 acres, half woodland, half pasture with a good sized garden. I have a Case IH 275 4x4 with turfs for mowing, a JD 1010S for gardening, and a large skid loader for material, snow, and logs/ firewood, plus lawn tractors. Has anyone had success doing all this with one or two machines?

Man, do I ever feel stupid. I've been borrowing the neighbor's tractors all along. My dad was right, I do look more like the milk man than him. Where's my slide rule and bank book? I'm gonna fix this right now, and make my dad proud of me, I think. Thanks guys.

For small acreages the recommended ratio is between 4.9 and 8.7 tractors per acre, with the higher number associated with bachelors and recently divorced landowners.

I need to show your responses to my wife. I bought #5 2 weeks ago and darn if #6 didn't show up yesterday in Photo Ads. Going to get it tomorrow.

I keep telling her I'm just upgrading, but the old ones keep finding uses to keep them around.

Ran out of barn space for all the tractors and got an ATV.

Use it to get to any of the far points on the property as well as running errands to neighbors or visiting in the evenings.

When I am not using it, the kids ride around the fields for hours chasing butterflies.

When they aren't using it, my wife uses it for gardening.

Handiest thing I've ever owned. Most dependable thing I've ever owned (Honda 350 4x4) Wish Honda made antique tractors.

Peace

I'll second that! Got my first ATV last year, a Honda Foreman 4x4 (off ebay). Most useful thing I have. Second would be the skid loader. Except for putting up hay (with the ATV and skid loader) I could get by with 2 tractors on 300 acres easy.

You don't need any formulas. It's simple, there no such thing as enough toys.

The accepted standard is two tractors per acre for the first 5 acres, one per acre for the next 10 acres, and one per 5 acres after that. So with 18 acres, you should have 21 tractors. You better start watchin' the ads, my friend. :o)

No. Currently have 5 and looking for another. When I go to haying or anything for that matter, I don't have time to be fooling with implements (work in town at day job). Therefore things are pre rigged and when the task arises, I'm ready to bale product, not fool with equipment that usually doesn't want to cooperate.

I have my new wife convinced it is necessary to have one tractor per impliment as " it is so dangerous to change them". So... All I gotta do to get another tractor is come up with a chore that my present tools won't do. Sweet!

I figure you need one antique tractor per acre to get by.

Plus 1 parts tractor for every 3 running tractors. So you need 18 + 6 = hmmmm ... 37. Round that off to an even 40 and you should be ok. Glad to help, Joe

No wonder I'm all screwed up--I got the formula wrong! I seem to have 3 parts tractors for each running tractor....

No, don't try it! I can see from your post that you only have half as many tractors as you need;-)

You need at least three.mabe four. One for working, one in the shop being repaired and one outside the shop waiting to be repaired. The 4th would be a standby in case the working one died.
