I am a long time Ford man, but need a small utility tractor with loader and have not any luck finding a 3000 or 4000 in my area. I am looking at two tractors with loaders. One is a MF 135, Gas for $4,500 the other is a AC 5020 Diesel for $4,000. Condition is about equal. Which one is a better buy based upon reliability and parts availability? I have no experience with either.

Ed,

I'm a semi-old Massey man and I kinda' echo the others thoughts. Based on parts and service available I would say the MF is your best deal. However, be careful with a loader on a 135. The front axles on these tractors were not really designed for a loader; they're a little on the light side. Certainly usable but not for heavy use. Most people would probably prefer the diesel but the Perkins gas engine is not a bad choice. Good luck with whatever you pick!

Thanks to all for your comments. The MF 135 does have a rather large bucket for such a light tractor, so I was concerned about it. By chance, I ran across a guy who has a MF 40E with a loader that he wants to sell, it's susposed to be an industrial variant of some MF model, but the guy was not sure which one. Does anyone know how it relates to the MF line up?

Ed,

The 40E should be approximately equivalent to a 255 Massey but with a fixed solid front axle assembly. It probably has a shuttle type transmission as well. If you are going to be using a loader a lot, this machine would be much better suited for the job. The 135 is a great tractor but it really is intended for utility type uses. Hope this helps.

Tommy

(This message is based on my faulty memory from 2 years ago. Frankly, please disregard it as it's worthless.....)

If I remember right, my neighborhood mechanic was working on an engine tear-down on someone's 5020, and he was waiting over 2 months for the engine parts. I believe that is the series that was in the Allis/Fiat/just before Duetz difficult times, and neither side is good at supplying the parts to those engines here in the USA?

Heck, I don't know, but might want to check in on it.

I've heard similar stories about getting parts for 5020's.

I've heard similar stories about getting parts for 5020's. I know that I've seen two sell at auction for salvage. The story both times was that the owners got tired of trying to get parts.

Id always buy the 135, but im a Massey man, so im a bit biased. If the 135 was the diesel there would be no contest, as its petrol, its really which 1 u think drives better

don't know much about the chalmers, but you can get 135 parts anywhere.
