My dad and I hav be thinking about getting a tractor in the next year to work a small hobby type farm. Around 20hp, we narrrowed down to a Mahindra 2015, New Holland TC21, and Chinese made LENAR FS274-1 (NOT A GREY MARKET). All with loaders and 4X4. Lenar was AAbout 1k cheaper and 27hp. This would be our first tractor. Any advice would be helpful.

The tractors I have seen coming out of China are the worst looking piles of sloppy cast iron I have ever seen. Someday they will improve their quality control & have superior machines. But today I would not even consider one.

I don't think the chinese tractors are as bad as some people say, a neighbor has one of the cheapest ones that can be bought (Farmpro from Homier) and his runs out great. Its about 2/3 the tractor a similiar sized "good" brand would be but at less then half the price. But for only a $1000 differance I'd definately get the New Holland or the Mahindra. The reputation only adds a lot more then that if you ever try to sell it.

In 1998 I got the largest NH "boomer" type tractor which is a 1630 Hydrostatic at about 24 PTO HP. Wonderful tractor, have about 1400 hours on it. If I was buying a NH now, I would get one of the larger Hydrostatic tractors available: TC35D at 29 PTO HP, TC40D at 33 PTO HP or TC45D at 40 PTO HP. These all have 3 range Hydrostatic, 4 WD. Get heavy duty front bucket. These would be a nice tractor, actually capable of doing lots of work. What you are shoping for will not do the job and you will really be stuck with a "toy" tractor. I would also check out the Kubota tractors in these sizes. With about 30 PTO HP you will be able to pull things like a real 5 foot disk and other ground engaging implements, plus the loader will handle much more weight. Good luck.

A couple of decent choices, but have you checked out the Kubota tractors? They seem to be selling very well around here, there must be something pretty good about them.

Yes we did. They quoted us about 100 more than Mahindra, but salesmanship has something to do with it. They acked like we where a burden on them on a rainy day. Didn't have any papers on the thing.

That experience reminds me of the local Kubota dealer. A buddy was going to buy a tractor, & had a company check to pay with. He asked me to go along for advice. There were no other customers, but the salesmen would not even take the time to talk to us. After a half-hour, we left, went to the John Deere dealer, & he spent his 20,000 on a green tractor. If you are interested in a Kubota, Carver in Dunn, NC claims to beat most any price, even after shipping tractor to you.

A knowledgable dealer with a well staffed service dept. is worth a lot more than $100. This something that needs to be checked out, no matter what brand you decide on.

Take a look at the Branson tractor they have a website. The TC21 is good, I would stay away from the Chinese machine--medocre quality, it might fail just when your in a pinch.

Yes, I agree, the Branson line is pretty good. I work part time for a dealer and really have had no serious repairs to do so far. The main problems we have had is rain can get around the electric switch for the flashers and it lights up, and for bush hogging it would be wise to protect the fuel tanks with a belly pan, both easy fixes. For serious farming the tires need loaded, or add some weight. The seating is comfortable, well laid out controls and forward and reverse in each gear is handy. It is made by a company that makes a lot of John Deere models.
You will hate yourself in the morning if you buy a Chinese tractor. Even their supporters advise you better be good at improvising repairs. One site even suggested the entire electrical systems would need replaced on a new tractor! They are rough and crude!

I believe that the company that makes a lot of those John Deeres is Yanmar, a Chinese company with a poor track record for quality.

Yanmar is a Japanese company and they actually have a good reputation for small diesels such are used in sailboats.

Bransons are Korean. Not Chinese, but....

I owned a twenty year old Kubota that ran like it was brand new. My neighbor has it now and couldn't be happier.

Step up and pay for quality. You won't be sorry.

I wouldn't be so quick to through out a chinese tractor. They are not all the same. If I am not mistaken, Lenar does come w/ a 2 year warranty. That being said, dont let a few bucks get in the way of what you really want. New Holland and Mahindras are very nice tractors.
