This afternoon I backed out my MF35 Gas Turf Special and turned it off to grease the fittings on the tractor and finish mower before cutting grass. I jumped back on the tractor and tried to start it and the nothing but a click. I cleaned all contacts from battery to selinoid and starter cables and replaced one of the battery clamps which appeared damaged and still get only a click. I tried jumping it with vehicle and battery charger and still nothing. Now I was told to remove cover underneath transmission and try and to get fly wheel to move. Can I do that by dragging the tractor in gear??? I rebuilt the engine 4 years ago and has operated just like new, So I know the engine is fine. It"s been so long since I removed the starter is ther anything I should be careful with when removing if the starter is the problem. Thanks Mark

...or the solenoid is going bad/is bad. Have you tried jumping it 'AT' the solenoid("+" cable to the small connection)using a screwdriver? Be sure in Neutral/ watch for sparks/ don't trim your toenails with a chain saw/etc. You can get just the solenoid at many parts houses. AND the starter itself could be bad if the above doesn't help.

I was going to try tie directly to starter from battery but wasn't sure that was a good idea. I measured voltage at battery and starter motor and they drop to 8 V under load which indicates that the circuit with selinoid is working. I will give it a shot and see if it makes any different. I did notice that the start motor connection sits at ground when not engaged so I'll disconnect selinoid. Thanks

Voltage is low. Either the batteries are done, the cable/clamp is loose/dirty or the starter is failing and drawing very high current.

Well after checking everything electrical I decided to remove Starter and test it off the battery. It worked fine and I ran it several times. I think the shaft action may have got stuck in the out position(it didnt retract back down the shaft) I think that's called a Bendix action. So, I put the Starter back on drove the starter straight from battery and it worked. I connected the selinoid an cable's back to starter and everything is fine. Tractor friend says take the starter off again and put some Anti-seize on shaft that it may have got dry. Boy was I worried that possibly something in engine broke and seized block. Thanks everyone.
