7ft hog on IHC 300U

Got an IHC 300 Utility with a nice fresh
engine and 3-point, supposedly making 38.16 HP @ 1750 RPM at the PTO.

A 6-foot bush hog is just about as wide as the wheels. I"m thinking a 7-footer would be nice to have for skirting along the pasture fences without getting the wheels too close.

Mostly mowing pasture grass that is under 6 inches.

Do I have sufficient HP to spin it nicely?

Is the oddball size going to give me grief when it comes to parts, etc?

Would anyone suggest looking at an 8-footer?

Looking for that "sweet spot" of time versus quality of cut and not overloading the machine.

Thanks in advance.

Greg

GWB: We ran a 6" hog on our 300U, and that would bog it down in rough going. However, if you"re not mowing all that heavy of stuff, you may be able to get away with a 7". I wouldn"t worry much about the "oddball" size--7 footers are fairly common.

I would be more concerned about the lifting capacity if it is a reasonably heavy duty machine. May need front weights. PTO should handle ok.

Thanks, MB

No worries on the front-end weight issue, it think. It has the factory pie weights on both the front and on the rear...which may be why the previous owner had to turn around a few miles from home and borrow a much bigger truck and trailer to deliver it! That half-ton extra makes a difference...

Can"t speak for the up-force, but the down-force on the hydraulics easily raises and holds the back end of the tractor right up off the ground. Wheel weights and all.

The owner's manual or website for your particular brand of rotary cutter will tell you exactly what the minimum hp and cat requirements are. Run too big a mower and you get to fry your pto clutch and if you get real lucky break a pto shaft.

Also, some rotary cutters can be offset to handle the fence problem. Check the manual.

Nice, soft grass in the horse pastures, and the occasional itinerant weed. Rarely more than mid-calf.

In other words, glorified lawn-mowing.

7 or 8 is fine. Size to horsepower/PTO RPM is not a problem for you. Adjust your speed (safe speed) to keep the RPMs where they need to be as you cut.

King Kutter is a reasonably priced 'hog and durn decent quality. Parts are easy to get. Supply store or internet.
