I posted a message a while ago about my dad passing away and leaving me with, among other "hobbies," 4 John Deere tractors. One I"m keeping for farm use, but the other 3 I know little about and can"t really use. I"ll get pictures this Friday, but could somebody out there give me some suggestions on how to best sell these guys? I"m in the Bryan/College Station, Texas area. Here"s what I"ve got:
-- 420 in decent remodeled shape. Toss in a battery and I"ll be a dollar she"ll crank up (might need tires).
-- Another 420. Very rough shape. Possibly the one parted out to restore the other, but I don"t know.
-- Model A (diesel, in case they"re not all). Runs strong (probably needs battery and/or tires) but tranny slips occasionally and it"s a bit too much for me to handle.
Ideas? Suggestions? THANK YOU!!!

Thank you, again, to all who responded. Very interesting on the Model A info, too. I'll have to call my brother again (he called me with the info). I'll get pictures on Friday, too. Consensus seems to be for me to take my time and accept bids (very wise, I agree). However, I need to sell them pretty fast (I must sell my property, too, and we close soon - I can't stall any longer). Where can I find out about local auctions?
... I'm sure some of you are thinking that I should be able to do this research myself, but my experience with "tractor folks" is that they're an interesting group, to say the least (hey, my Dad was one, too!) and, more specifically, John Deere fans are willing to help. Plus, my Dad got a lot of his information on tractors from discussion forums like this. Ya'll are the experts in this case, and I don't want to end up at some auction in Nowhereville that sells everything under the sun.
THANK YOU!!! a million times over!

There's an auction in Nome, Texas (just east of Beaumont, on Highway 90) (www.hornauction.com) on the 1st Saturday of the month (which should be coming up the 2nd of October).
There's also an auction, a bit closer to home, in Willis, Texas, at J&L Ag Equipment (www.jlagequip.com) on the 2nd Saturday (October 9th). I usually make an attempt to attend this auction (I've got some "results" from their September auction, if you're interested).

I've "un-hid" my email, if you'd prefer to contact me directly (just remove the space after the @ sign).

HTH...

Steve

FIRST, and foremost, DO NOT RUSH into doing something you'll regret. Take some time to decide if you REALLY want to part with Dad's stuff. (Over a period of time, there's TONS of posts on these boards looking to FIND an old family tractor that was sold in a moment of haste.)

At the very least, hold off for a while to get several offers, and ideas of value.

Accept payment only in cash, or arrange to meet at your bank, and have a trusted bank official verify that the funds are in in your possession (or account) before the tractors leave your property, and give the buyer a bill of sale, complete with serial number.

Could picture them here and sell, but although most users of this site appear to be, and probably are honest folks, there are people around the world that are scammers and are looking for people just like you to scam for $$$, leaving your bank account dry and your father's pride and joy gone. Be careful. Can't advertise locally? Sell to a dealer locally, or on consignment? There are users of this site that are from Texas, and can probably be very helpful for what may work best in your territory.

Be careful that your (your father's pride and joy) don't end up south of the boarder then loaded onto a freighter headed overseas, with you left holding the bag.

Good luck, and just be careful. My condolences to you and yours.

My point exactly. Someone local to her like you, a neighbor, a friend may be of great help to her, and see that all's well that ends well, for all involved. A dealer wouldn't be my first choice since they've gotta buy low to make a profit selling higher, but if all else fails, some money is better than none, which could happen with some of the overseas scams I've been hearing about.

First of all you did not say what year A could it be an all fuel ?????
First talk to several people about these tractors. Do not take one persons advise. Be up front with all. Tell them you will take a bid from them but get bids from several other interested people. GO SLOW on your decision as to who and when to sell. If you can post pictures.

John Deere never made a deisel in a model A altho I have seen an A tractor that was converted using an Olds Deisel car engine but it would be impossible for the tranny in any 2 cylinder tractor to slip are you thinking clutch?, The only factory made deisel in a 2 cylinder would be a large wide front standard tread such as a R, 80, 820 or 830 or the rare 435 the same size as the 420. if it has a tranny that slips then it would have to be a later 6 cylinder tractor with the power shift transmission, You need to try to find out more information. Deisel and large with a tranny that slips sounds like you have a Ford 6000 SOS tractor.

Hello Anna,
Very sorry to hear about your father passing away. If you still have the three John Deere's, I may be interested. Please email me, and I'll try to get in touch with you. I have family living in College Station so we could have him take a look at them. I am not an expert on John Deere, but I do not think there are any "A's" that were built that were diesels. Does this tractor have 3 point hitch?

Jim

just a note....
there was no such thing an a model A diesel. You most likely have a Model R, or 70.
