I bought the F-350 Super Duty with the 7.3 engine.
Its a 1999 with 9,665 miles actual. (I knew the man now deceased). I don't think he ever changed the oil and that is my first item to do. It will always be garaged in the winter and I am wondering what oil you fellows would recomend for Dec. thru Jan. in Michigan and Feb. thru. April in the south?

I would look at amsoil 15-40 marine oil. good stuff A guy had a pete with a 3406 cat, ay 600000 he traded her off . Dealer had him major it to raise value. When they pulled sleves the hone marks were still like new.bearing the same not bad for 100,000 mile oil changes.

I'm looking for a low mile F350 that I can afford. Looks like you got to it first!

In my travels, I ran into a man selling a truck who was the original owner. One of his selling points was that it had ALWAYS had synthetic oil in the crankcase. He was an investigator with our state dept of securities. Before that he was with the dept of consumer protection and he told me about a case he worked on where a company was selling used engines and misrepresenting the miles on them. In the course of their investigation they employed some engine rebuilding experts who claimed they could tell how many miles an engine had on it (within a few thousand) just by measuring the wear in a few key places. The one exception to that was an engine using synthetic oil. It does not wear as quickly. Anyway that was his story. I didn't buy his truck (not the "right" one), but I'm halfway convinced to start using synthetic oil.

If I stumbled on to a 10,000 mile 6 year old truck, that's what I'd probably use. Now I gotta figure out which is the best synthetic oil for the buck.

Mobil bought 25 car/truck engines and ran them for 250k miles using the correct weight Mobil 1. They tore the engines apart and could not find ONE part that was worn beyond the the production tolerances published by each manufacturer. In fact, they found honing marks on most of the cylinder walls!

I use Mobil 1 in every engine I own. Synthetic oil is cheap compared to rebuilds.

For your PS diesel: "Shell Rotella 15w40 year round anywhere." (In US/48). Thats what Navistar and Ford recommend. Unless your going to the Artic below -20.

A while back Consumer Reports studied synthetic oils vs regular oil in N.Y. taxi fleets for 150,000 service miles. Both performed equal. The key is regular changes, has always worked for me. That removes combustion contamination in the oil. I'd rather change it, than trust it will be ok to have containation flowing in a synthetic with extended change intervals.

Thanks for the advise. It was the answer that I was hoping for as others have told me the same thing.
