Can't get any help with this off of the JD forum. I'm trying to rebuild a water pump off of a 2640 Diesel. I cannot get the pulley off. I've tried a very large press. I think the part of the problem is that the pump is hard to postition in the press supporting the pulley with a bearing splitter, and I may not be pushing on the shaft square. A long time ago, I saw someone rattle one of these apart with an air hammer, but I don't remember how. If I support the pulley and hit the shaft with the air hammer, will it come apart?

When I was in a deere shop we had a very beefy puller like a steering wheel puller we used. Sometimes I had to run it in with an Impact gun and then start applying heat to the hub (not the shaft). I have also cradled a water pump in the crook of my arm and used a punch and beat on the shaft. They sometimes have to take a shock to break em' loose. They are hell to try to set up in a press for disassembly but a press works best when going back together. An air hammer with a blank punch should be able to shock it leoose though.

Does that pump have a cast pulley or a tin pulley if it is a tin pulley it is a good idea to replace the hub i have seen thoes hubs come off when used the second time but the cast pulleys can be used over. You should be able to pull that pulley off with a 5 or 10 ton puller attatch the puller legs to the bolt holes they are not on that hard. When you install the new bearing be sure to press on the outer race only if you don't the bearing will not last.

You should be able to pull it off with a puller. Sometimes, though, they can be tough! If you are re-using the pulley (hub?), I'd be carefull not to abuse it, as it may come loose later, if damaged, and go through the radiator along with the fan! If you do not have the tools or knowledge to procede, take it to the dealer's shop. Even if it costs a few bucks, it's better than a failure later, and if they fix it, it should be warranteed against any failure.
