Separate OT board?

Thot I put this on earlier today but it does not appear. About all OT posts on this discussion board. I have no problem about any content of OT posts on this board. With the election just around the corner and continuing problems in Iraq and elsewhere, a lot of guys need and have a lot to say about a variety of OT posts. Even so, wonder if a separate OT board would leave this one pretty much free for posts related to tractors etc. Have no idea if this is possible but offer it as a suggestion.

Hang in...only less that four days and the election will be history...sort of!
Thanks for reading. PC

I kinda think of the tractor talk forum as the catch-all for general, broad topics like the one I'm considering posting this morning.

The forums lower down seem to help to clear up the clutter that this forum gets by classifying by color brand. It seems that everyone comes here and the posts cycle through pretty fast. People who have a farmall M go to the farmall board for questions specifically related to them but will then come on this forum for more general topics. You post about a specific tractor here, you're likely to get opinions from AC, JD, MF, Kubota, etc. people. You post on the Deere board and get only Deere people or jerks looking to stir the soup. The posts don't seem to fly along on the other boards as the people are not making political posts or even many off topic posts.

I guess I'm saying this is sort of thought as a "Common Ground" for everyone, just not No-Holds-Barred. I'm as guilty as the next guy for diving head first into an off-topic posts. I just don't get insulting as others seem to do.

As long as you follow the rules, Kim is a reasonable, intelligent person and will treat you right no matter what you're posting.

Right after 9/11 a similar situation arose where many OT posts came up and "due to popular demand" a sort of OT forum named "Common Ground " was started. This forum caused more problems than it solved, It rapidly deteriated beyond what Kim felt was appropriate for this site and was done away with. I can remember back a few years when there were 2 forums on the Kountry Life site which is affiliated with this one and one of them was ended for basically the same reason. I dont post here alot (usually to help answer questions } but have been a regular for several years now. There are alot of good people here and I hope everyone tries to have a little patience with each other whatever direction is taken over this OT issue. This is too good of a place to ruin over it .

I didnt mean to come across like I disagree with the idea , just wanted to mention that it had been tried before and didnt work then. If everyone was civil about it I'm sure it would work fine, but then if everyone was civil there wouldnt be these problems over the OT and political posts. Another option would be if more people went to Tractor Tales with the political and chat type posts , thats more of an OT place.Well I've said enuf for now- have a good weekend. JK

Tractor Tales seems to be kind if a private club new folks aren't thrown out just kind of ignored and made to feel not at home

Some days I agree, that the folks over at 'Tales CAN "freeze" you out...but most times they're downright friendly. What works for me? Well, when I go there and post in a friendly manner, I don't always get a friendly response...but I'll continue to "crash" their "party" until they either let me into the group or throw me out completely. Just try to keep it friendly on YOUR end, and that way, if there's a problem, it's somebody else who's at fault...THEIR problem, not MINE, the way I look at it.

No, I didn't take it that way. I sincerely meant, you are probably right. You aren't the first person I've heard say that. Enough agree with that and seem to have a feel for it, that it would probably be worse.

I think a separate OT forum would be great. But in my opinion for it to be successful you have to have 2 things. First off, it has to be listed on the main page with the rest of the forums, and at the very top of the list. Secondly, you must have strict rules, and follow them regarding OT on the other forums. You can't say this OT should be allowed and that one not, so the only sensible way is to allow none.

The OT forum would probably act as a lobby, an entry into this site, as the Tractor Talk one does now. You will get questions on how much oil does this take from newcomers, they can easily be recommended to the other forums. Demeaning of other users would never be allowed, and probably not politics or religion.

You would also have to have a bit of tollerance on the other forums. Stick to the no OT rules, but don't crucify a person, in particular a new person to the site, for OTing. They might not know.

I really believe this can work, but these are only suggestions. I'm willing to discuss this with anyone. My email is unlocked.

Have a nice weekend all.

You did put it here.
It was deleted while I was reading it.
I posted a question to Kim and now that is gone also.

Your post may soon be gone. ;o]

Even though it's an election year and even though a lot of people have things to say, this is still a tractor board. Those wishing to express their political views could easily go to a political discussion board where their comments would be on topic.

Watzzat, I can"t hear ya..... .In case you didn"t know, typing all caps is shouting in P.C. language, and very offensive to many folks. I reckon it doesn"t matter if you"re talking tractors or two-holers, there is a way to offend anyone if that person decides to be offended.

frank, No problem to me in the least, however there are many who take great unbrage to someone typing in all caps as it amounts to hollering or yelling by net users. Just trying to save someone a real butt chewing by someone else..

Thanks for your most kind words. I"ll take that as the ultimate compliment. The less fortunate are indeed close to my heart, however most times I manage to extend my benevolence in anynomous ways that do not draw attention to myself. From now on, I"ll be anynomous to the same extent that your compliment was given. And what is your favorite tractor?
