Just ran into one of them 'Hmmmmm?' items on e-bay. Fellow there has a metal Friday tractor tag and also has an International metal sn tag that he "just run across it in the barn" . Not implying anything but kinda makes you wonder...

In many states and provinces, it is illegal to tamper with or remove an identification plate. E-bay also has rules that prohibit it. Sorry to be a stick-in-the-mud, but the fact is that the practice of rebadging a stolen vehicle will eventually move to the tractor market. Why make it easy for the isolated criminal out there?

Trace that number before purchasing to see if it"s "hot". When looking at a rare tractor run the serial number with the manufacture. Some venders tend to accidentally end up with a pricey tractor after assembling parts from several donor machines. There are more Deere 330"s out there than what ever rolled out the factory door.

I have a 52 H that one day will go for scrap, You can bet a dollar to a donut, that if I can get a few bucks for the tag someone will own it.

What differnce does it make? On the other hand a man would have to be extremly stupid to advertise a serial number from a stolen tractor. I imagine most of the ones to see are legitimate. Shoot, I'd sell some myself if I thought they would bring anything.

What is the difference? You would likely be selling a tag to be put on a stolen tractor?

Hummmm.

you guys are too paranoid. lots of tractors have missing tags, they get knocked off, corroded, lost. Most tractors have the number stamped more that one place. Engines quite often have their own number. Magnetos are numbered as too are starters and generators. If you are worried you would be wise to write some of them down.

a few years back a friend of ours had a special tractor that had a good tag. he let someone look at it. the tag went missing.

seem the guy looking at knew a guy in Iowa that had the next serial # and so he stole it and sent it to that man so he could tag his 2 tractors as consecutive and then sell them.. a lot cheaper then buying the real tractor and shipping it from NC to IA.....

TRUE STORY FOLKS but no proof existed in the authorities eyes.

I do have them written down, need them when I go 20-50 miles for parts during harvest....

I don't mean to overblow this either, :)

Just strikes me as odd that one would replace the serial tag on a tractor. Seems to invalidate the whole issue & point of the tag. A unique number to identify the implement, and people are swapping them? Can't find a good reason for that.... Must make parts guys pull their hair....
