Hi all, I am thinking of buying my dads 1988 Chevy Suburban, But the problem is that it has a fair amount of body rust. So I was wondering? Is there any GOOD parts catalogs that sell MOST body parts? I'm mostly looking for Wheel wells(Front&Back), Fenders(Front&Back), Floor pans, Some door frame parts, And maybe some doors. Any help would be Appreciated. Thanks, TractorMike

I did my 87 diesel 4WD 3/4 ton Suburban over about 8 years ago. It was a complete rust bucket and had been driven in the winter salt every year until I did it over. I bought it from my neighbor, the original owner for $500 - which at the time I thought was a bargain. Now, I take it off the road in the winter. I found that some parts are not available new, e.g. the rear quarter panels. I wound up going to a junkyard and cutting some off a non-rusted Suburban. In retrospect, it would have made much more sense to buy an entire Suburban from down south (I'm in central New York State). I had to replace all the fuel lines, brake lines, AC lines, outer-inner fenders, all the doors, sills/rockers, etc. What a mess. I've also noticed that Suburbans and K5 Blazers are particularly prone to gather salt over the rear wheel wells and quarters unless you install some sort of guards. JC Whitney used to sell formed PVC liners and they work great. Problem is, I don't think they're available anymore. Last year I purchased a 90 diesel 4WD 3/4 ton Suburban at an auction for $900. It is from Long Island NY (that's south to me) and is rust-free. Runs perfect but has no title. I'm keeping it "in stock" until I'm ready for it. I'm not sure if I'm going to strip it, or attempt to retitle it. I don't think I'd ever attempt to completely redo a rusted Suburban, it's a big vehicle. I am, however, very pleased with how mine turned out. It now has 470,000 miles on it with the original engine (never been apart). A few rust blisters are beginning to show, and at 470K miles, although it starts and runs great, I don't expect it to last much longer and am somewhat hesitant to take it cross-country.

If you're looking for a late 1980s-era Suburban, my recommendation would be to detour anything with a rusty body. They can be a major undertaking to repair. Instead, look for a rust-free southern vehicle. I bought an always-in-GA 1990 Suburban a few years ago and you can still see factory paint markings on the chassis. I wouldn't touch a rusty vehicle now since there are so many non-rusty ones available. If you live in the north, it would be worth a trip to the south or west coast to pick up a vehicle from a used car lot or out of the Truck Trader. They are reasonably priced also.

There's several catalogs on 87/older and I think some parts cross but you would need to check. Also noticed that the heavier trucks 1 ton+ still used the 87/older body style while the smaller 88s are the body change year. A junkyard here KY just pulled in an 88 pu about a week or two ago. This would be how you need to find all the body parts. You could check with a local body shop to just order you carry out after market parts. We bought a new honda hood for $100 and they wanted $75 at a junkyard.

FOr what it's worth, the full-sized Blazers and Suburbans did NOT get the new body style until 1992. I own one, and it's the first year that the Suburbans match the style of the light full-sized pickups that came out in 1988.

several years ago dad purchased the entire collection of body pannels (aftermarkets) for a c65 chevy so I am sure that someone out there has some for one of those suburbans since they should be simmilar to a mid 80's pickup at those key locations.
