Practical Paint Question

Tractorfolk:

I'm hobby farmer type. Use my tractors(IH 444 and Cubs)but use them hard. Want to give quality paint jobs but do not care about show quality.

Propose to take external sheet metal and fenders to professional shop and have them prepared and painted. Will defer painting engine , drivetrain, etc., until later or take the tractor w/o sheet metal and fenders to remote place that buys, paints, and resells used tractors. Don't trust this operation to paint sheet metal correctly.

Question is this: Will I have to pay a premium for tendering sheet metal loose to good paint shop,i.e., is it difficult for paint shop to work on loose pieces?

Thanks fellows. Frank and dr.sportster got me to thinking about value of painting tracs that are used hard. Guess I just wanted them to look better, kind of like fulfilling one of my childhood fantasies. Gonna defer whole mess until I am a hobby restorer(not likely to happen).

My general experience is too close to that of Lincoln's.

Appreciate all the insight.

I took the sheet metal off my tractor and prepped it for paint. I took it to several body shops to try to get it primed and painted. Most did not want to mess with a small job. The one that did agree to paint it wanted more than the whole tractor was worth. I ended up painting it in a friends garage. Spent $189 (plus a case of beer) and ended up with good results. You may try your local community college or high school to see if one of the students would paint it.

I agree with Frank in respect to job quality;it will be show quality paint on a working tractor. Its just sort of overkill. Its like this;chrome platers dont do halfassed econo plating jobs and body shops dont do not so glossy econo paint jobs.As far as separate pieces;they have hangers for in the spray booth and shouldnt mind separate fenders, sheetmetal, etc.[but will probably complain anyway]

THE SHEET METAL BEING OFF THE TRACTOR WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM AT ALL. HOWEVER, I CERTAINLY WOULD NOT GO TO THE EXPENSE OF A PROFESSIONAL PAINT JOB ON A WORKING TRACTOR. SINCE MY SON OWNS A BODY SHOP, I CAN ASSURE YOU, THAT TYPE OF PAINT JOB WILL BE VERY HIGH.I WOULD RECOMEND JUST PAINTING IT WITH A GOOD QUALITY ENAMEL WITH A HARDENER. MUCH CHEAPER, AND WON,T SCRATCH AS EASY. GOOD LUCK, FRANK
