I have a 5000 watt Gas Gererator. I hooked up my 225amp welder to it today and welded at 90amp with a 3/32 rod and it didn't even pull the engine has hard as my skill saw. Will I damage either machine useing them like this? I really wnt to be able to weld on some fence etc. Thanks for any thoughts.

I have to assume that yours is a modern type gen set with circuit breakers. We use a 4500 Onan for the same thing with a 225 Lincoln welder. Use small rod at 75 or 90amp.You might have trouble starting the arc with some rod as the gen voltage will drop until the governor can respond. (This is why you need a diesel gen for spot welders.) If the breaker trips, give it a minute to cool off then reset it and try shorter welds. The welder has a Duty Cycle and is not meant for continuous welding but the Lincolns always used to be built like a tank (20years ago).
If you are using it around a tractor do not connect the ground clamp to any part of the tractor, especially the FEL but go directly to your work.If you are welding a part of the FEL make sure that your ground clamp goes onto the section you are welding, with no pins, cylinders etc between the stinger and the ground clamp.

Not a good idea if your generator is 3 phase as most heavy welders use only 2 phases and the generator would have a very unbalanced load. I presume yours is single phase.
Apparently a three phase welder would be likely to make your electric meter run backwards and utilities would not like that!

As long as your welder isn't pulling down generator frequency(RPM's) or voltage too far, it shouldn't hurt either one.
Be aware though that if either one of those things happen, either unit or both could be damaged.
It sounds to me like your setup is probably working OK if it's not making the engine labor hard.
