Changing over to 12 volt. What resistor size would be ideal if I keep the 6 volt coil. I am trying 3.5 ohms but would like to know for sure. Thanks a lot!

Retaining the original ballast resistor and adding another 1.6 Ohm resistor IN SERIES works well.

The original resistor is a positive temperature coefficent resistor, meaning that it starts out at a low resistance when the ignition is first energized, and then the resistance increases over a period of a minute or two.

This provides a "hotter" spark for starting, when the starter is drawing down the battery voltage, and then the increase in the resistance helps with longer point life and a cooler-running ignition coil.

Retaining the original ballast resistor and adding the additional resistance keeps the PTC feature, for easier starting.

Measure volts across coil and across resistor. You will soon see if coil is getting it"s fair share (ie. near it"s rated voltage) of power.
