Found a 1993 dodge truck with cummins turbo diesel 5 sp manuel trans, 4 wd, 154,000 mi on it.What are your thoughts on this kind of truck? Seems to be in like new shape inside and out. Never owened a diesel truck before do some hauling mostly 16 ft. stock trailer to haul horses, goats etc. Just wondering if anybody has had this kind of truck and what are the pros and cons. Thanks for your thoughts. Mark

Bought mine in Feb '93; dually 2wd with 5 speed Getrag; many of the the Getrags failed early; knock on wood, mine's still going with absolutely no problems. Dealer replaced the clutch (under warranty) at 12,000 miles; also replaced a bunch more at about the same milage..... .evidently a known problem with a 'batch' of clutches; other than that the power train hasn't been touched. It's showing 170,000 miles; speedometer has been broken for about 13 months; keep aiming to get it fixed. Pull a 32 ft cattle trailer and a 27 ft equipment trailer; still get about 19 mpg (empty, no trailer); never had it hooked to anything it wouldn't move; by far, the best truck I've ever owned. The rear fenders are fibreglass; been repaired a time or two; got one that's cracked now.

Thurlow, is speedo problem the little reduction box that has the ratio gears that drives the electrics to the speedo??? Mine locked up & sheared the gears at about 100 K miles. At the dealer it only cost around 50 dollars. Just be sure to get one with the correct ratio... 5 minutes to change... Davis

Buy it fast thats really low miles for a cummins. I have freinds that have 500,000 plus miles and dosent use a drop of oil. And i have heard of some these trucks going a million miles. Cummins start great in the winter unlike most ford and chevy diesels. Also the fuel milege is alot better than the other diesel trucks. As to the rest of the truck holding up they sure do.If you want to replace injectors and glow plugs all the time get a powerstroke. If any one disagrees with me just go to your local truck pull and you will see for your self the best diesel trucks Dodge with cummins power!

I'll race you to it. If was taken care off, and only has 150K on it, is almost broken in. I'm with you, grab it.

i have had 2 dodge cummins pickups now and loved both first one was a 91 4x4 with the getrag 5sp, it had been used to pull a 20ft horse trailer for 139000 miles constantly when i bought it i pulled a 22ft stock trailer with it till i sold it to my neighbor at 165000 miles and he has pulled a 20ft stock trailer with it constantly for 3 years now and its at 250000 miles and the only thing done to it besides regular maintinence[brakes, shocks, ext] is i had the tranny and transfercase rebearinged at 150000 miles so i would say if you want a reliable puller there a very good chice,i had no chassis problems but the bodys are of the regular old dodge make they bend easy and are proned to fall apart long before the engine and running gear does.i now have a 2001 that i bought new and its been great

I have a 92 Dodge 3/4 ton 4X4, Cummins & Getrag 5 speed. 150K miles & all I ever did was put a water pump in it. I think the 93 has a New Venture 5-speed. The Getrag is noted for problems, mine is OK, but it has started to roar & whine some. The NV tranny is much stronger... Some of the Cummins/Dodges are still running with over 500 K miles, I have been told. All in All, I am well pleased with both my Dodges. The biggest fault is that Dodge does not know how to get paint to stick to the metal. Dodge paint washes off in the rain. By the way, the early Cummins Dodges are the easiest starting Diesel I have ever seen. Even at single digit temps, they fire right up.

93's still have the throw away Getrag!! The do last longer if you service them properly (use proper oil) and over fill them by one qt., but i did what most do and replace it with a NV4500. NV 4500 is much stromger and actually last pretty good.

The Getrag is the weak link in the driveline of the pre 94 diesel models!! (with manual tranny)

Robert, there might have been a mid-year change in 93. My Dad bought a late year 93 in Sept. 93 , right before the new 94 body came out. His 93 had the NV tranny. Owners manual said so, & I saw it.. It has a closer pattern & throw than the Getrag. Regards, Davis

Robert, I do not drive the 92 a lot , but plan to keep it quite a while. I do any trailer pulling with my 01 Dually now, so I will not be straining the Getrag in the old one. If you do not mind, how bad was expense to get NV tranny put in ? I heard you also had to swap bellhousing... My Getrag is making some funny noises, & I know it may die someday. Reason I ask, Truck needs paint in a bad way, & I am debating how much to invest, considering the transmission issues. Thanks, Davis

Several places sell the "kit" with tranny to make the swap. They run about $2,500.00 + labor to do it.

I did mine myself, it's pretty straight foreward, and just takes time.

Not to change the subject, but what can these diesel engines do? 154k sounds OK, but I have seen some of the ford 7.3L at 240K....
What kind of shape would the engine be in at 154K? How much of an engines life depends on what was towed with it?

About a year ago, I read an artical about a Dodge 1 ton with a 5.9 Cummins that had one million miles on it, and the engine had never been touched. Belonged to a guy who delivered trailers from the factory to dealers. Can't remember how many transmissions he had been through, but it was a few. It hit 1 million at about the same time Cummins built their millionth 5.9. They had the truck on display, and gave the guy a new engine.

If it has had the oil and oil filter changed regularly and the other filters changed once in a while it should still perform like new I bought my first one in 89 when they first became available and used it hard (but not abused)and it had around 140,000 miles when I traded for a new 96 and it still run and performed as good as the day I bought it

Hi Mark,
First, I'm a Ford guy. But, the Cummins will probably run forever, they're a good engine. The rest of the truck, I've been told, will not last. Watch the tranny and drivetrain.
Or, just get a Ford. :>)
