When I was a lad of 11, we visited my uncle who was stationed in Albuquerque, N.M. There was a wing of B-36"s deployed there. It was a sight to behold watching those monsterous beauties take off and wonder if they were going to run into the mountain to the west. They never did, but I shall never forget that drone that was unique to that plane alone. They were elongated B-29"s with a wider wing span to handle the 6 rear mounted prop engines along with the 4 jet engines. For those of us who remember the transversion from prop engine planes to jet planes will also never forget the fingerprint sounds that accompanied such planes as the P-51 Mustang, the F-4U Corsair, the Lockheed Constellation, and other magnicient aircraft from a bygone era. At the time, I didnt think it as being anything but a job, but I was fortunate enough to work for Curtis Pitts back in 1957 (right out of HS) and work on a couple of Pitts specials, which also had a drone of their own. My first airplane ride ever was with Mr. Pitts in his personal bellanca. Today, I look back at that experience as anything but a job.

Hey Paul,
Did you ever get to fly a Pitts? I bought one (homebuilt) then built another one that I modified. Put a Hio360 200+ HP helicopter lycoming on it with a thined and raked prop. I was the Illinois State unlimited aerobatic champion in 1993 and 1994 with that Pitts.
Lost my medical so collect tractors now! I always said that flying upside down is the most fun a man can have with his pants on! And yeah I remember craning my neck to watch the B-36's. My grandpa also craned His neck since He was born in 1867, 33 years before the Wright bros first flew. Larry Coltrin

Larry, I never got to fly in a Pitts, since they were only one seaters back then. Since, however, they have come out with a 2 seater, and I would love to take a ride in one. I don"t know how long this old 65 yr old body would retain lunch tho. Since Mr. P{itts also had a crop dusting service at the time I worked for him, I did get to get up in a Stearman, and experience a few snap rolls, which was scary, but neat. Good to hear from someone who built and flew a pitts. What a plane, especially given the fact that the design was as much a "seat of the pants" event as the flying of it. The man was just a regular guy, not some high hat engineer. In fact the story goes that every time the Russians would compete with the Pitts in international aerobatic contests, and lost, it meant that the engineers who built the losers were sent to the gulags, which in turn retarded the development of the Russians" military aircraft program.

Paul, if your still reading here, I left my e-mail open. Give me a ring and we can chat. I met Curtis a few times myself, and He was always as you described him. Larry Coltrin

I'm assuming Curtis Pitts was running radials and maybe bi-wing radials (barnstormer).

There is an acrobat that has a private strip up on lake Texoma who comes down this way sometimes. As you say, those old radials are unique and this guy knows how to fly....deliberate stalls and all; absolute vertical climbs (not many jets will do that).

And then there are the days when the "Confederate Air Force" comes thru on their way to an air show somewhere..... . I run out of the house every time I hear one go by and remember the days of old.

txblu, Some of the newer versions of the Pitts are now running radials, but 1957, they were using a lot of Lycoming 175"s and equivilant. The early Pitts were also one seaters, whereas now they can be bult in a two seater version.

When I was young and naive, I could hear them coming over the house..... the drone of those 6 huge engines...will never forget it.

Was so high (35k ft I guessed) you could only see a silver dot followed by a long contrail.

Have the site bookmarked and go to it often to reminisce.

Once, while in the air force, we were doing "touch and go's" at Kelly Field in San Antonio, TX. and one of only 2 or 3 XC-99 cargo versions of that big bomber was parked there. Talk about a huge plane.

THere is a Jimmy Stewart movies about SAC that has some great scenes of the B-36. In my years of growing up in western Kansas the farm was under the path of SAC when they were headed "north". These big dogs went over a lot lower than 35K feet! Sometimes, if I had known what a foot was I'd say they were 35 foot. Over the years it was like watching history. The B-36, the B-47, the B-52 and the B-58 hustler all could scare the crap out of you. I lost count of the times that I clutched a tractor or combine or car from the big jets. The first thing you heard was this gawd awful high pitched scream followed by the explosion and roar. I suppose they still do it with the B-1 as I was on the interstate 80 in western Nebraska once and one went over about 300 feet up. I had a B-52 pilot wave at me once when I was on the farm. Northeast corner of Norton county in the northcentral part of Kansas about 5 miles from the Nebraska state line.

A couple of interesting side notes about the B-36. One is the interstate hiway system was designed with a straight mile of roadway in every five. Reason?; Landing strips for airplanes and were built to handle the lb per foot of the B-36. When it was an active airplane it couldn't land many places and was pretty committed to getting to where it was suppose to go to be able to land. The second is in the 50's a tornado hit the Air Force base in Texas where many of the B-36's were parked. Many were destroyed and beings the B-47 was operational and the B-52 was close to being this started the scrapping process.

Happened to catch this a couple years ago. Think I even taped it. I was impressed at how great the flying scenes were, both B36 and B47

Been at a few hundred feet in a '52. Know the feeling from the other side. Not fun if something goes wrong and you have to disembark.

I remember a '50 tornado in downtown Waco but there was no base there. I know Wichita Falls gets beat up regularly and there is an AF base there (Shepherd Field). That is probably where you are talking about.

Remember the Jimmy films. You know he was a Brigadier (one star) General in the AF don't you. I remember seeing at least 2 (starring him)and one was the '47 in a round the world speed event. The other one was Rock Hudson and I think it was '52's. Then there is "Dr. Strangelove".

I remember that very distinctive sound very well. Would run outside and/or look up and, like you say, wayyyyy up there, especially for the time.

Really was distinctive, wasn't it.

I was fooled later on in thinking a C-133 was one. Don't know why a 4 engined turbo prop sounded like it but the 133 did; the 130 however, did not. I ran out of the house and looking up, did not see what I thought I was going to see.

I was stationed at Altus, AFB, Okla where I saw an Atlas ICBM being unloaded out of one. Really a shoehorn fit. Was told that was why they stretched the 130 and upped the power making the 133.
