Have a Lincwelder 225 here at the farm I work at, its powered by an Onan GAs motor. Latly it has been giving us trouble. It had 2 12 volt batteries on it and would start up fine, then it just quit on day. We put two new batteries on it, 2 12 volts. But it will not start with two batteries, it will start with on battery and the other battry leads clamped together with a vise grip.

Should this welder be running two 6 volt batteries, can"t find any thing in the manual. Also have a tried asking dealers who deal in welders and they are totaly clueless.

I need some help from the experts

I just recently went through rebuilding this same welder. Downloaded the manual from the Lincoln site (free) but it doesn't tell you a whole lot about the Onan motor and its' works. It does use two 12 volts batteries hooked together to make 24 volts. It doesn't actaully have a seperate starter motor, it starts off of the welder windings. Mine is hooked up this way and runs great now. Hope this helps a bit.

Lincoln has a website that has a lot of free information on their welders and welder/generators. I misunderstood about the manual, sorry. If you find a resistor, let me know please, that may be what my problem is. From what I understand, it has always had 2 small 12 volts and if it needs that resistor, that may be where my problem is at. Good luck

One good battery will start the engine...my guess is that it starts on 12v ,runs on 6v...have the coil checked (at N.A.P.A.)and look for a 12v to 6v voltage reducer....it will look like a spring inside a bakelighe holder ....you have 12v going in, the coil spring disapates 6v and you have 6v left at the other end.....if you think its bad wire around it.....if it starts you need a new voltage reducer.....dont run it too long, the points and condcer are made for 6v.....Good luck Don L C

I think I may have the same welder. It also doesn't run. I didn't replace the 2 small 12 volts with two more, I put 1 bigger 12 volt in. It ran for a few months, then quit again. My grandfather had bought it new and it has a history of going through coils. Are you getting spark? I have a manual. Any pages of interest you'd like me to scan and send to you?? It's kind of thick. If I can get enough time, I could probably scan most of it. My e-mail is open.
