Hey buddy, You probably have satalite internet don't you? If so, what system, plan, etc. Checked into Vonage phone system, $24.99 a month for phone, unlimited service nationwide. The difference in that and the regular Ma Bell will more than pay for the faster hookup, which we need anyway for the phone. Thanks for any input, and keep yer stick on the ice, Harley

DSL is not the only option, perhaps your ISP could get you an ISDN line not as fast as DSL but better than dial up. Just a thought, RICK

Harley,
Don't know what you are looking for, but there is a company called Speednet. it is at www. speednet.com. They have a wireless broadband. My brother has it and it sounded kinda pricey to me, but if you want hi seed, it may be the way to go.

Harley,

These are the Starband dishes. The one in the middle is double gunned for TV reception as well as Internet service.

Starband uses both up and down on the satellite instead of a phone line going up. Fairly quick too, we move a huge amount of audio during the course of a day.

I would look into vonage before you get any of the hardware. I bought the box at a local circuit city and vonage shows they support Illinois and they make it sound if you have broadband you can get vonage. that is not the case. i live about 20 miles east of st louis Missouri. i had it all hooked up and couldn't get a number in my area code. apparently anything below Chicago and the suburbs of Chicago is not covered by vonage yet. I could get a Missouri area code but everyone that would call me would pay long distance charges. so i took it all back. i thought it was funny that they would sell it at a retailer in an area not supported by vonage.

Harley,

FYI Be sure that whatever satellite broadband provider you choose will be able to support the telephone service. Most broadband satellite connections will not support this (or just won't work) due to delays in the uplink transmission. You might want to check with Vonage on this issue. We just disconnected our Direcway system, because of dreadfully slow upload speeds (downloading is fair). IMHO there is no comparison between DSL and broadband satellite. I've had both (but not at the same location). BH

the satellite connection i had would stop dead in the wind cloudy rain or snow. The wind was my fault on mounting wasnt sturdy enough(put on the side of tv antenna) but i wasnt happy at all never contracted, got rid of it after the trial period

I've been looking for something better myself. I am paying right at $30 a month for dial up, I can get DSL, but that will cost $50 a month. The ISP I am with now is the only one that services my area. Every other provider I have looked at would require a long distance connection, and as much time as I spend on-line I know that would off-set any saving in a hurry. Guess I am stuck with what I have. The price I pay for living in the sticks.

An approach that is becoming more and more popular is to use a wireless network tied to a single high speed network connection. This only works if you can get a group of people together. They need line of sight to the hub, but I believe the distance can be a few miles (I've read some articles on pushing that to like 10 miles).

The downside is managing the co-op issues and whether or not your main ISP connection tries to contractually limit this to protect revenue vs bandwidth usage. I forget which city it is, but one of the port cities in MI on the east edge of Lake Michigan has a city wide wireless network.

This is definitely a growing trend.

Dave,

It"s Grand Haven. A small town up from the state line about 1.4 hrs. Very much a resort area with a progressive outlook. Nice place to visit on the lakeshore in the summer. Stop by and see us.

Hi Guy,

We use the Starband systems (www.starband.com). Got three of the silly gizmos; it's the only way we can get broadband out here in the boonies.

If a guy goes with a three year contract, a connection runs in at $49 a month (I think). Trouble is, the hardware runs in at roughly $700 per installation.

Wet snow will stop 'em dead and of course, a guy has to be aware of all the firewalls, anti-virus stuff, etc. 'cause they are 'on' all the time.

Please don't call me sir; makes me feel older than I already am. :>(

Allan

Thanks, I'm tryiung to put together a package with Direct TV, high speed internet, and phone system all in one. Gonna keep looking on the net. Sir wasn't referring to your age, I just turned 57 today, but it referred to the classy picture of the guy in tux and tails riding the fancy horsey on the post away back when. Just seemed like you should be a knight or duke or earl or something to ride those high stepping Hannavarians. Talk to ya later, just plain old Allan, :-) Harley

Yep. I just got hold of a "Technical expert" in Bangladesh or Eastern Mugubwa or somewhere and they said the same thing. Can't hook phone, puter, and satalite together. Slow uplink speed or something. I don't know for sure as I recognized Akmed's voice and said howdy to him and he clammed up like an auctioneer at an empty sale ring. Don't think he thought I could find him. Glad to see he found a job, but a little disappointed he didn't call and cancel his plane tickets from Mugubwa. Oh well, such is life, Later, Harley

With any dish system you will need a clear view to the south west. Usually 30 degrees off the horizon to start. Trees and buildings interfer with the signal. Hard to get a neighbor to cut a tree down for you.
