Ever have this happen to you? During a discussion of tractors, someone comes forward and offers to give you a tractor? I had a friend at church offer to give me a "old" tractor her dad had. When questioned about the model, she only knew it was red and smaller than my old F-20. I told her I would go take a look at it. I just got through with rebuilding a 46 B and was looking for another project. She gave directions to "the barn" about 10 miles out in the sticks. My son and I drove out to "the barn" to see what this "little, red tractor" might be. Being a Farmall addict, I was really expecting to see a MF. We parked beside the road, went thru the gate and rolled the barn door open. At first we didn't see anything. Then way over in the corner, there it was..... ..... ..

The prettiest little Farmall CUB you could ask for. It even had a belly mower on it. On the other side of the barn was all type of equipment for this little jewel --cultivators, planters, even a blade.

I went back to town to see this fine woman. I told her thank you for the tractor. I wrote her a check for the "little, red tractor". My question to you is..... how much would you have given her? jmh

Well, We went and got the "little red tractor" this afternoon. It is a very low time 51 Cub. This will be a very enjoyable project. Excellent shape with light rust. Hood, tank, wheels, and fenders are in perfect condition.

I did go see the fine lady that wanted to give me this tractor. I told her it was a very desirable tractor to rebuild and that it would be worth considerable worth when reconditioned. She again stated she wanted to "give" it to me.

What did I do?

I wrote her a check for $400.00 (we were both happy).

As perhaps a few other said. I do admire you for being honest up front with her. Whatever the amount of the check. You did the right thing.

I had something like that happen to me.A woman whos husband was a tool and die man who had run a home business passed on and she offers me all his stuff.I told her she better have some kind of sale first.Reluctantly she did.She sold the lathe and alot of big items. Then she called me back and said come and take everything. The guy did alot of buffing and grinding and she was sick of the dust and grit in the house. There was things he must have made in tool and die school.I told her. This is stuff you gotta give to your son.She wouldnt listen.I had to force her to keep the adj. wrench and screwdrivers and even her anti-freeze.Just kept saying take all this stuff out of here ,please. You could tell the guy was highly skilled from these items.

what is your time worth? how about storage? hauling? repair or was it bought new and put in the barn? what if you crank it and a rod slings out the side of the case?

i just got a 69 606 from my neighbor who sold his house. came with 7 pieces of eqipment. his only concern was getting it off the property before they closed. could ahve gotten more if he went all over creation and spent a lot of time selling it but that was not his concern. he only wanted it gone.

he could have gotten more but he and i are both happy. maybe she has to get the barn cleaned out and you did her a big favor.

i make a point of asking up front what they want and if they say $xxx or it free i will ask if they are sure. if they say yes than it is a deal.

i do not take things and then second guess and i am not santa claus or the tooth fairy.

i have given away loads of "great things" and despite what i "could have gotten" was thrilled they were gone.

There's the old saying "what goes around comes around". Several years ago a neighbor was dying of cancer. I went to see him with a card with a $50 bill in it. He thanked me and said to let him know if I needed a favor. We both knew he wouldn't be around long and he died a week later.A few months later I heard his widow was selling his truck so I asked her about it. She sold to me for way less than she would have asked anyone else, I'm sure.

She wants you to have it, OK? Do you plan on keeping it? If so, let her know that and how much you appreciate it. To her, that old red piece of junk might be the world's biggest eyesore to her. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, as the saying goes.

I would let her know what the tractor might be worth. If she is given this info. she will have some knowledge to make a decision. She might have given it thought already and does not want to get involved in listing and dealing with the sale.Offering in exchange,to help her with knowledge and your machinery down the road, might mean more to her than being troubled with selling a tractor

That"s how I came by my "45 JD "A"--- my brother-in-law gave it to me. It wasn"t running, but, I"ve since got it running and use it all the time. I"ve offered to pay him for the tractor numerous times, but he refuses any money.
He also "loaned" me a drag type disc, and a mower---both of which he"d bought for that old "A".
He knows I"m not going to sell any of it, and enjoys getting back on that old tractor whenever he comes over....
I think the lady gave you the tractor for the reasons others have said----she knew you"d take care of it....

I would have thanked her for offering it for free, and then offered her $500 for it.

There"s a difference between the market value of a tractor (what SOMEONE would be willing to pay for it) and what it"s worth to me. I honestly wouldn"t have much use for that Cub, and I don"t want to be in the business of selling old tractors so $500 would be the max I"d be willing to pay for it.

Now, if it were a nice TO-35 or a 4020 diesel, my answer would be much different.

Yepper,

What's that old saying? One man's junk is another man's gold? I've got too darned many lawn mowers now, so I sure wouldn't want it.

But, this is why the woman offered it to this particualr fellow, I would imagine. She knows he'll take care of it.

I am gonna vary from the norm here....but not saying I am right for sure.

I would say that this woman from church must know you pretty well to feel like giving you this nice piece. She must know you are gonna take care of the ol' girl and not re-sell it.
If it were me, I would accept the gift for what it is...a gift. And I would do my darndest to return the gift to her.
Find out if she needs help trimming shrubs or pruning trees or plowing a garden spot, etc.
Be a true friend to her, and that will be worth more than any $$ anyone could give her for the machine.

Plus she gets the added benefit of feeling good about doing something nice.

If you write a check, it is either gonnna be too little or too much....there is no way to put a fair price on buying something like that from a friend. Someone will walk away with a bad taste in their mouth. If no money is exchanged, and this lady knows how grateful you are, there will never be hard feelings.

I have given away many things that held alot of value; things I had no use for. I would rather give them to someone I know who needs them than have a little bit of cash in my pocket.
The only time I ever felt bad about doing that was when I gave a truck to my father in law(not a new machine but still a good truck)and all he did was complain about it. You know that old saying about not looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Just be ready to step up to the plate when she is in need and you are in good shape.

That's my .02

You can't ask for anything better! It is a dream we all have and every once in a while it happens. It is like the MC commercial, alms at church $10, nice lady at church inspires expence for fuel for drive in country (with son) $20, open barn door, little tractor, shelf price $1500 to $4000... little red tractor mint with mint belly mower, you and son standing there alone, jaws down breathing barn air...PRICELESS! It is a God gift... you'll have to figure it out your selves. Me, I would talk it over with her, insure she wants to give way or now sell, and approved, keep it yourself or post auction for all to see, find good home and split proceeds between each other fairly, give a portion to the church this all happened at and have a good day. God Bless. PS... send picture of barn!

Having been in the antique business for a long time, I have the chance to deal with people on a daily basis that have no idea what their items are worth. I find that I sleep better at night not having to worry that I tried to take advantage of someone, even when offered something on a "gift" basis.
If your friend would really like to see her Dad's tractor put to good use, maybe she could give it to the church to be raffled off as a fund raiser? If not, I would give her the same amount that you would feel comfortable paying at an auction for the tractor.

JMH,

Did you stop and ask yourself why she picked you to "give" it to? This woman is no dummy.

She knows that it would mean something to you, that you know it's value and she knows that you are fair & honest.

So, I would imagine, this probably gives her some kind of comfort in knowing who it went to and that you will take care of her dad's old tractor.

Jesus accepted the kindness of many. He returned kindness in like fashion. I am with Allen. I assume you have been very good to this woman and she wishes to return some of the kindness you have given her. Be gracious, thank her and work hard to fix that little tractor up. If you sell it, give her family first right of refusal and thank her again. I'm not into cheating anyone. I do know that I have given away thousands of dollars of things that were useless to me and I know was of some value to someone else. Return the favor in kind to her or pass it on to someone else. Cast thy bread upon the water. It will return seven fold. Bill

Been there, several times.

I'd go back and talk to her about what she's really got, and what it's probably worth on the market.

If after that she still wants to give it to me, or sell it to me at a low price I can afford, I'd proceed with taking ownership. Otherwise, I'd help her sell it or at least smile and enjoy the good deed done.

I think I'd tell her what I though it would be worth on the open market, and then ask her to think about it a bit. Around here, if all was in good condition, she could probably expect somewhere between $2000 to $4000.

A pair of brothers stopped one day, and asked me if i had 2 good running lawn mowers that i would like to trade for the machinery they had in the barn! I had never met them before that day, so i suggested i go to see what they had in mind! When they opened the barn door, there was an old Troy-bilt tiller in one corner, a Snapper hi-vac riding mower, and 2 really worn out push mowers! They were so worn, the wheels were splayed out past 45d! The bros. said the machinery was what they wanted to trade! Well, i tried to convince them to just take the mowers and give me $50, but they said no, it all goes! A deals a deal, they said, and the home was sold to a developer who was going to build new homes on the farm! I offered them money, but to no avail! So, i took 2 of my best mowers to their house, loaded up the machinery, and went home! Turned out, the Snapper just needed cleaned up, and some maintenance done on it, but the Troy-bilt had a broken connecting rod in it! I repaired it and sold it 3 summers ago. Its still running good, and the Snapper, too. so, ya never know when fortune is going to smile on ya! by: Rustyj
