I am looking for a small, FAST tractor just to haul a small (125 bu) manure spreader 10 miles up and down the road. I would also be using it in the field for odds & ends. What would be a good one for this task? Thanks.

Look for a MF 165 I used to drive one that would go 35mph ,that the govener wide open.Used to get funny looks from the chief of police in school zones.

I'm don't know how often you'll be making the 10 mile trip but I'd also consider pulling it with a pickup. Tractor tires are expensive and you'll soon wear them out on road travel. That much pavement and tractor rubber is not a good match for you money.

That is a very good and very true point. Those tires are very soft rubber. I would reccommend an industrial tread tire if you will be on the road and won't be doing much tillage or work in mud. They will probably last better since they are hard and the tire lugs don't flex as much, which is what causes the tractor lugs to wear so fast on pavement. Good luck on your tractor. It might be better to get a truck mounted spreader, if you can find one that is in decent shape.

I once had a 1985, F-250 diesel (6.9 naturally aspirated), 4x4 that would work great for that job. But, why not have some fun and go with a 806, 856, or 966 IH? They will blow your hat off in high gear!

technically if you still want it to be classified as a "vehicle of husbandry" and have an smv etc no plates it has to move 20mph OR LESS. yes i know most tractors go faster then that. i know most cops wont bother you for it but that is the law. i never thought that a cop would hastle a farmer for not having the new smv but did. (i told the kid to put it on but he didnt and took a load of hay out) i had poeople passing me in no passing zones etc etc and yet he had the nerve to follow me until i got in the yard and give me a ticket for not ahving the updated smv. i even explained and showed him the new one, the old one was on there in good shape and visible and still wrote me a 75 dollar ticket. but thats another story but yes worry about brakes at weight. also i dont know where your spreading it or when but if your spreading primary in fall and spring and graze in summer and your trying to get out in spring and spread better get some trelleborgs

Based on my past experience a Ford 9N equipped with the auxiliary over and under will get you all the speed you can use. Will not hardly pull anything, but you will go fast!

Boog, Yep, buy a GOOD tractor rather than a fast one. Find what your needs/wants are, 3PT., PS, loader?, etc. What else are you going to use it for? Ignore the color, ALL companies made GOOD tractors, they also ALL made JUNK. If you find a tractor that interests you, post back here and see what peoples thoughts are.

A 125 bushel spreader is not exactly small, especially if you are ever going to pull it when it's loaded. Having a tractor with enough weight to keep it under control, and GOOD brakes is more important than speed!

Why get a "fast" tractor for a "half fast" job. Just go for a "half fast" tractor to begin with. Any tractor going faster than 20 mph on the roads is a disaster waiting to happen in the first place.

Paul is right; what's an extra four or five miles an hour? Get something large enough to handle the weight..... ...

Something FAST ! A Sliver King is one of the fastest tractors you will find. Farmall H and M are real fast too. You don't even want to look at the JD's they are slow.

A Ford, maybe an F-150. This is exactly the job they were made for.

How about a UNIMOG? They are a bit faster than a tractor, not by much LOL!

Like the others, weight for stopping that load is most importantant.
