What is up with the price of diesel fuel, it used to be half the price of regular gas, I fueled up my truck the other day and diesel was $2.33 a gal and regular gas was $2.09. How's the price of diesel where you live? there has to be something that can be done about this. I thought that diesel was a byproduct of gasoline. I suppose that when hydrogen becomes popular you won't be able to afford a bottle of water.
Just venting:

In Bristol, IN. diesel has been running parallel to premium grade gasoline in price per gallon for a couple of months now, 20 cents per gallon more than regular, 10 cents more than mid-grade. Not bad for a byproduct of gasoline. But I hear that diesel's very popular in European vehicles, so by demand, we payup to the gasoline manufactures, or lose out to foriegn competition. Solution? Bio-fuels that can be grown right here on American farms that are much cheaper to produce and run cleaner, if you can get our Congress and Senate out of the pockets of the oil companies, and stop dragging their feet and stifling production and refining of bio-fuels, in essence, killing it to line their pockets with oil stained greenbacks.

Below someone mentioned SUVs in Mass. I read an article that says that Mass. is preparing legislation to impose a $750 "ANNUAL" tax on SUVs because of the "disproportionate amount of road repairs they cause compaired to such vehicles as Yugos, gas/battery hybrids such as Hondas and Toyotas, etc". In Elkhart County, IN. where I live, they've already imposed a $25 annual "wheel tax" on ALL mortorized vehicles, because they say that those little gas/battery hybrid things get such good milage, that less revenue is being generated at the pump (taxes), and now what to put another 7 or 8% tax on fuels on top of that. The roads have more potholes than ever before the "wheel tax" (there is no road maintenance) came to be, and no politician can explain where the "wheel tax" went to that was supposed to cover the road maintenance, so the friggin morons want to raise taxes again.

Around here regular gas is $2.11 on road diesel is about $2.20 and farm diesel is $1.80 I think if gas get's much higher I'm gonna start burning moonshine or something, Haven't quite figured out what I'd do for diesel?. Heck, maybe I'll come up with some modern day steam engine! TractorMike

Modern day steam engine might not be a bad idea. But then, cutting down and using timber will have to be taxed and require special permits. And forget about coal. The tree huggers will be picketing your house, and tampering with your tractors at night when you sleep. LOL.

diesel is raising in popularity for vehicles because those people who dont have farms and just buy a diesel pickup and a big suv along with cellphones because" its the cool thing to do and your neighbor has one" are driving costs up. look at the 80's vs. 90's for diesels in pickups. people buy pickups and drive them all the time as a car but its an "image thing" diesels are ment to work hard not look pretty. also the oil companies are like congress if they want more money they just say ok lets up this and theres nothing anyone can do. check out www.greasecar.com been reading up alot on this and thinking of tryin it. with all the fast food places plenty of oil around

O.K....I'm gonna get beat up on this one but..I remember pulling up to the pump in my '79 Landcruiser one summer day in '82 and paying $1.26/gal. Anyone wants to compare the inflation rate in the price of gasoline vs. the general inflation rate? I believe you will find we ain't all that far from real comparable $ value in gas prices from the good ol' 60's. If it were that far off there wouldn't be so many SUV's around. By the way in 1970 I remember Sunoco 260 (the best stuff around) was 33 cents per gallon. Used to put it in our mini bikes.

I remember as an eighth grader a science teacher seperating hydrogen and oxygen from water for us. Of course, he used a Bunsen Burner to do it, and the hydrogen only lasted a fraction of a second after he put a lit match under the test tube. The oxygen, lit a match, blew it out, dropped it down into a test tube, and it ignited. Maybe that guy's breaking it down somehow as well.

When I hear of proposed Hydrogen cars on the highway, I think of my old science teacher, Mr. Gunner Gunerson, and envision a bunch of Hindenbergs runnin around on wheels. I'm not sure that technologies have made Hydrogen any less explosive, but could be wrong. Who knows? Not me.

When the price of fuel goes up, I always blame the government for not keeping it in control, but who am I to do that, people vote them in, and can vote them out if there's a better way. For you older fellows, do you remember the 1903 Stanley Steamer? in 1906 it was called the "Locomotive of the Highway" just put wood and water together - fire it up and you have steam power, the Power was infinite, the Stanley Family bragged that they would give you a new car if you could hold the throttle open for more then 3 minutes, No One Could.. Let's go back to Steam Power, and watch the Oil Rich guys squirm. lol

Global demand is increasing asymptotically for a finite natural resource. The price will continue to increase until a suitable replacement is found.

over here in germany, we pay 1,01€ per liter of diesel. this is about 1,36$, which makes about 5,25$ per gallon of diesel. regular gas is about 15% higher, so a gallon costs right about 6,--$ a gallon today.
but we observe the diesel prices rising in comparison to the gas prices for years. some day rhey will be equal or even higher than the gas.
we should so something about it. but WHAT?

Price is $2.45 in Rhode Island and nearby MA. The
gas is around $2.03. Prices don't seem to be
stopping or reducing any driving. Big SUVs are
still all over the road.

Last time we went through this. I was rebuilding my pickup gas engine so I set it up for cheap propane (higher compression). Couldn't find a propane tank and setup cause every body else was doing it. By that time the price of propane climbed to equal gasoline, and I did not do it. I figure same thing happen to diesel..used to be cheaper but not now with every body and his brother using it.

Well you would think that here in Lee Raymond's (Chairman / CEO of Exxon Mobil) hometown of Watertown, SD there would be cheap fuel...but, regular is still 2.07, and diesel is 2.24!
I sure this will be another record profit year for Exxon Mobil and all the other oil companies...

NEWS RELEASE 1-31-05
"Exxon Mobil's profits rose to $25.33bn from $21.51bn last year, on revenues up 17% to $298bn. Along with the world's other biggest oil producers, Exxon Mobil benefited from the giddy rise in crude oil prices last year. The Texas-based company exceeded market expectations with its performance, which also broke records for the fourth quarter of 2004. It made an $8.4bn quarterly profit - its highest ever - on revenues of $83.3bn. "Strong operational performance in all areas of our business helped Exxon Mobil capture the benefits of favourable market conditions in 2004," said chairman Lee Raymond. The sharp rise in profit was achieved despite a 1% fall in oil production and a 2% decline in gas output."

Something sounds fishy there, now doesn't it? I read in the paper last week that gas in the 40s and 50s was more expensive than it is today, if you compare inflation, actual dollars, and so forth. If that was true, you'd think farmers would've switched to allmost all diesel back then. I think the oil companies are paying the newspapers to put that garbage in there so people won't worry about being bent over every time they pull up to the pump.

Well you could say that heating oil is driving the price of diesel but that is truly only a very small off set.

It really comes down to supply and demand.

Look at it this way..... ..... ....
You own a service station that has both gas and diesel. You have 10 other gas stations with in 1/2 mile but only 1 of them sells diesel. You have contracts with big trucking companies that says you will give them X amount off the pump price if they buy all there fuel from you.

So you tell me..... Which product do you think you can mark up the most and not realize a loss in sales to the average Joe that needs fuel for his pickup. GAS OR DIESEL????? ????

A second point to road diesel prices is the fact of the government reducing emissions. The rack where we load has just added a injection system to inject a additive into the diesel and they are talking about going to a ultra low sulpher diesel very soon. The engine manufactures are complaining that they are doing all types of changes to the engines to reduce emissions and it is now time for the oil companies to do something to help out. We just went through a emissions reduction on all new engines a year are so ago and have another reduction deadline in the next year are so.

Some body has to pay for all these tree huggers and you know it will not be the oil companies so we elect you to spring for the cost.

Fuel is a commodity.

A large capacity fuel tank, say 5000 gals allows the farmer/contractor to speculate in fuel. If as they say the stuff will get to $3.00 by this summer, if you fill the thing up you will make $5000 if the fuel increases from $2.00 a gallon to $3.00/gal.

On the other hand if it goes down to 1.00 a gallon(unlikely), you will loose $5000 but your fule costs would be $5000, or $10,000 in any event. So it is a classic bet on the future with no risk over current prices.

The smart money in my opinion would immediately go out and buy now the amount of fuel you expect to use for the rest of the year.

We had one local fuel distributor that tried to not lock prices this spring. He's scrambling now, most of us simply had to change suppliers. Same thing with fertilizer. Local co-op tried to not let farmers lock in, I was out there this past week, says his volume is 40% what it was last year.

I am far from a yuppie but I can guarantee my next truck will be a diesel. I like the power and fuel mileage and life of the engines. Living on a farm and using diesel tractors then using a gas of the same size sure makes you realize the difference and how a diesel is much cheaper to own. Oh, and I pay cash for everything... if I can't I wait till I can.
