My nephew has a 99 Chrysler with a 2.5, It sometimes makes an engine noise that no one has been able to diagnose. He's been told it could be a balance shaft going out, to noisy injectors. Really noisy when cold, quites down when warm, will go away at 2000rpm Not piston slap. Only has 65,000 miles. What are the common problems with that motor, besides being expensive to tune-up and work on??

You are talking 2.5 yet you say a V6. The only 2.5 I have heard of is a inline4 like I have in my 94 Caravan with 170+thousand hard miles

The 2.5 liter he refers to is indeed a V-6. It is of Mitsubishi design and is in a Chrysler Sebring, more than likely.

I have seen some of these with lifter noise at times. I have also seen an accumlation of debris in the oil pan that blocks the pickup tube. I have seen these engines get by on very little oil pressure. I've never owned one, but I always suspect the debris since I have seen it and didn't really have a reason for it being there. I got the old "Of course, I change my oil whenever I'm supposed to" bit from the owner.

Probably need more description on this noise.

Chris Vangel.

I have worked on many of these vehicles over the years at a private garage. It seems that they all do it. Its like a characteristic of these engines. My 89 Dodge Shadow 2.5 with turbo just turned 218,000 yesterday. Still runs strong, good gas milage around 30 mpg on the hiway.

I have a 91 Dokota with a 2.5, has 137,000miles on it, mine makes that tapping sound too. quiets down once warmed up. good little engine, not much torque, but good on fuel.

I've got an '89 Spirit with the 2.5 and it's had a tapping sound that comes and goes at idle since it had about 50,000 on it....still going strong at 135,000.

I have a 99 Voyager van it makes lots of noise also it has been worse since I had a head gasket replaced a few years back. These are bad for the head gasket to leak oil out of the back side. I don't understand what you say about the tune up ? 4 spark plugs and your done.

I had an 86 Lancer that did that, turned out to be a broken flex plate. The part that couples the engine to the transmission.
