Allen,
Last year I was charging $10 to just bale. 12-15 to cut rake and bale. I don't really feel like I was charging quite enough, definatly not for this year. Also did quite a bit on 50-50 shares as well. There are alot of round balers around here, but still a need for custom operaters. I really enjoy doing it was the only way I could justfy buyin some new equip.....Jim

for the last couple of years my neighbor did a few for me at $5.00 a bale. i imagine the price has to go up this year with fuel prices the way they are. i bought my own round baler this year so i hope to do some custom work myself. i'm thinking in the 7-8 dollar range. we'll see what time brings!

I just got quoted $17.50 per bale to cut and bale it for round bales and $1.30 per bale to cut and bale it for small square bales.

That's in Lubbock, Texas.

Hi Nathan,

Heck that seems reasonable. Is that what you have decided to do with that patch this year?

Using Swather = cheaper? in reply to Allan in NE, 04-06-2005 08:48:47
Reading up on what everyone else uses for haying it sounds like things are a bit different out here in dry West Texas.

The guy I talked to uses a swather and cuts one day and bales the next. Sounds like a bit less uncertainty and stress than folks who are having to worry about moisture so much. Not sure if that affects the price or not.

It's the same way here.

Like Cowman says, a swather equipped with a crimper followed by a big baler when the hay is ready.

Then, get it the heck off the field using a 3-point tote and stack 'em with a loader.

Cheaper and easier to pay someone to do it for you in reply to Allan in NE, 04-06-2005 08:48:47
Yeah, it has had tumbleweeds and yucca/cactus stuff taking over and so I finally broke down and bought a tractor for weed control (that's how I justified it anyway). I finally got it all mowed down so hopefully it will be reasonably decent to bale this fall.

Talking with the guy he said that the CRP type grass that I have (bluestem, side oats gramma, etc.) on it is only really good to cut once per year in the fall.

Reading up on it, it sounds like I would be better off spending the $ on a fertilizer spreader and spreading fertilizer on it than worrying about the actual baling.

Still a lot to learn about the whole process.

Thanks, Nathan

Was about $8 for a neighbor, $8-12 from a pro custom guy last year.

That was cheaper fuel & twine tho, who knows what it will be this year...

Thanks Paul,

Just sittin' here rollin' ideas around in my head.

This spring weather is gettin' to me and since I'm out of the loop for another season on buyin' a farm, I'm just trying to smooth the irritant with some "what if's?". :>)

Hey allen, if you don't mind using those pretty red tractors of yours, pick yourself up an old square baler, and bale em right on the ground. JD 14T and the like are dirt dirt cheap, actually, alot cheaper than dirt since the price of real estate is so high. I was quoted $20 a bale from my neighbor to bale our hay with his round baler, wrapping cost extra, I didn't hire him, borrowed a square baler from a farmer I work for and baled it myself with our tractor, but since I hated borrowing, I bought a JD 14T baler for next to nothing and now bale it myself and sell my hay since I don't have any animals. You get more money putting hay into small squares than round. True it's alot more labor intensive, but you got to have more expensive equipment for round bales, with handling equipment to move those big bales and load them on buyers trucks or your trailer. You still have to have bale storage unless you have them wrapped and then they only keep for so long and you'd better not leave them in the field, I worked for a farm this last summer that had left some in the field for a week and the birds had pecked holes through the plastic. If you have any with holes you can't use ducttape, it won't stay on (atleast not with silage bales), you need a special bale tape availible at your local farm supply store. Course you could always get the missus out there standing on a flatbed wagon reciving bales and stacking them on the back of the wagon while you happily drive your tractor, but I will warn you that her arms will grow in size after a summer of this and she'll then be able to hit you that much harder after you bring home another tractor ;')

there's alot of truth there jon. i do the same. i small square everthing if i can except for maybe 5-10 rounds. the rounds are used for when i'm gone for a couple of days so my wife doesn't have to feed. if the weather is threating and i don't have time to square bale i'll go make rounds quick so i don't loose the hay completely. i lost alot of hay last year to rain because i didn't have time or labor to get it square baled in time, hoping to curb that this year with my own round baler instead of waiting on the neighbor!

Howdy Allan,

Can't really say. Around here in S OH everybody and his brother has a round baler. Kinda like everybody has a horse anymore. ha ha I do have a neighbor who squares some of his hay and has another neighbor do some rolling for him but I think they just trade labor or he gives the guy half of the bales. Just depends. We still do a lot of it like the old folks did and just trade help. A lot cheaper that way. Now, my grandad used to have that same neighbor roll up some of his hay but I think he just paid the guy with 3/4 of the bales since he only needed a few and mainly wanted the field clipped. God bless.
