My wife just bought a new Yukon and I am going to run Mobil 1 in it. I hear a lot about breaking a motor in with dino oil first then changing to synthetic. Then I hear that some cars come from the factory with Mobil 1 in it. My plan is to run the motor for 2000 miles with the original oil and then switch to Mobil 1 . Is this too soon? If it is please tell me the reasoning. I'm prolly overanalyzing this thing but just can't help it.

ASAP new engines come out of the factory with it so you do not need to wait for any lenth of time, but just change filter every 3-5000 miles and top off , they is no reason why you can't streach you oil changes to 10-12000 miles between dumps.

Lots of new high end cars have come from the factory with synthetic, namely Mobil 1, for years now. Porsches and Corvettes have had it from the factory in the past and as far as I know still do. Volkswagen TDI engines come filled from the factory with 5w50 Castrol synthetic and call for only synthetic oil in the owners manual.

the way cylinders are honed nowadays, you can use synthetic from the start.thats why many new cars come with synthetic oil from the factory now..lucas

I thought I heard somewhere on here that GM ships all their cars w/ mobile 1 from the factory? I might be wrong, or I might be right? I have always used natural in all our vehicles. If you think about it, which is going to go first in the piece of junk cars they SPIT off the assembly line today? The engine, or something even larger that will force you to sell the car long before the engine will ever go out? I never really saw much of an advantage to synthetic in my opinion except that you can go longer with out changing the oil and it stands to heat much better. But where in a Yukon is your oil getting "super heated" as the synthetic oil producers call it? We have used dino in all our tractors, even the turbo, which is where oil gets super heated, and it lasted for nearly 20 years w/out an overhaul, and this is a tractor that is used maybe every day but sunday, winter, spring, summer and fall. My point is, I am still sceptical of what is the hype over synthetic oil? You all can keep switching, keeps the dino oil prices down for me :). So I think I have to agree with you, you are over analyzing the thing. Your tranny or something electrical will go out long before the engine, and by then, I really doubt you will want that car any more. We have a 92 ford f 150 that has almost 125000 farm miles on the original engine and has had the tranny rebuilt once. This truck has been used to pull 20ft hay wagons ricked 6 high out of fields, and the engine is the least of concerns. It burns at the most a quart of oil between changes and smokes a little, but it is a farm truck that does a lot more engine work than a normal truck, and right now, we want to get the money to get rid of it because of the tranny again, not the engine, it still works great. I think what is more important is that you keep the vehicle serviced regularly. I know you can supposedly go longer with synthetic, but I couldn't stand to go more than 5k miles without changing the oil. By servicing it more often, I am able to check over everything more often, therefore, reducing my chance of a breakdown? Thats what I think, and I know there are going to be a lot who disagree, which is fine with me, life would be boring if we all disagreed, right? Good luck and enjoy the ride :)

You using a computer, Hurst? It"s just a fad, this internet thing won"t last. Stick with oil lamps too cause I don"t think this electricity has proven it"s self. Synthetic oil... snake oil if you ask me.

Run the breakin oil the factory put in the engine for at least 3000 miles. This allows the rings, cam and lifters to seat. Then you can change it out to the synthetic. You still have to maintain the factory oil change and filter intervals, either by the oil change indicator built into the computer,if your truck has this option,or by mileage to maintain the warranty. If she does alot of short trip or stop and go driving, drives on dirt roads,or towing,(all considered severe application)I would change the oil and filter at more regular intervals than the oil change indicator would have you do,which can stretch it out to 10-12000 miles.I personally can't justify the extra expense of the synthetic, which still has to be changed at the same interval of regular oils, from which I have had excellent results.

Thanks to everyone. This vehicle won't get many miles on it..maybe 6k a year. I plan on changing the oil 2x/yr. I like syn oil 'cause I believe it wii not degrade as quickly over time as dino oil. Dino I change every 3 mos. or 3k miles. I also like how it flows in cold waether...you can really tell the difference on those 20 degree days.
