My lifts were getting sluggish and i found out it was low on fluid. I add fluid and I had a dealer tell me to make sure the filter was clean too. In removing the filter, I believe I have introduced air into the system as it will not lift at all now. The filter is in a can cover located on the side of the reservoir which is held by a nut on top. Is there an easy way to get oil back into the filter?

Not for sure how yours is set up, but most Jap imports have a pickup screen located in the bottom of the center housing just in front of rear axle. Generally between two plugs on sides of housing.

geok,
I'm not familiar with a 'pickup screen'. Can you explain what this is? On this particular model the reservoir is under the seat and is shared by the transmission. The filter housing is located on the left side of the reservoir and is higher than the fluid level in the reservoir. I tried loosening the filter cover while running the tractor just to see if any oil would come out. I had none.

You might trace the suction line from the hydraulic pump back to where it connects to the center housing. If it does then a filter screen could be inside the housing at this point

Thanks. I'll check it.

I did a test last night with the filter while attempting to make sure it had oil and not air. The pump appears to be working, as it would suck oil through the filter opening while I attempted to get oil in it. Does this tell me that the screen you are talking about should be clear?

Depend on where the oil comes to the filter from.

Does it come from inside the center housing?

Not sure on this one. All I know is the low pressure tube comes from the bottom of the reservoir, through the filter, then to the pump. The filter is on the side of the reservoir and the pump is located at the front left of the engine. The high pressure tube runs back horizontal next the the low pressure tube then branches up toward (what I would consider)the valve.

It looks like to me air should be able to pass on its own back to the reservoir, except for the filter since it sets higher than the reservoir.I may have to send you a picture to clarify. As you can tell, I know very little about hydraulics.

If you can, along with posting your reply, send it to my home email address... brent_cain@bellsouth.net
Thanks for the help!
