Ok I need some computer info from you smart computer guys!!!!

I have NT on my computer and the thing is SLOW. I have a cable high speed hook. I have 76% free space, I defrag, disk clean up, run Adware, and run Spy ware at least once a week. It will speed up a little bit but not like it should be. We crash it and it runs fast as fast can be for a while and then just gets slower and slower. Is there something that I am not cleaning that I do not know about? What can I do to keep this thing running fast ( it can take as long as 5 minutes to log on at times).

Thanks for any and all input on this matter

BUDD

I agree with Ludwig, upgrade to 256mb if you don't want to shell out for more (512mb is ideal). Try ebay, you can usually find more than enough memory for pretty cheap. I also recommend clean reinstalling windows, installing any updates and service packs, and then reingtalling your essential software. If you have disks for all your software, it's not as big of a job as some people think. Before you do that, though, try this program, free off download.com- do a search for ccleaner. It deletes your junk temporary files, but the best thing is it lets you see all the stuff that starts up when windows starts and you can turn the nonessentials off. Try that first, then the memory upgrade, and if that doesn't give you the boost you want, reinstall windows. Sorry for the long post, e-mail me if you have questions. Good Luck!

go to 2000 in reply to BUDD, 04-21-2005 07:52:31
I'll second that sugestion to upgrade to 2000. I ran NT. I Run XP and 2000 both. 2000 has some things I like over XP- less junk if you don't need things like CD burn etc. Look around for a "no longer installed" copy.

Try something easy and free first - In internet explorer go to Tools, then Internet Options then under the General tab click on Delete Files - If you wish, delete the offline stuff as well. All this does is delete the remains of webpages stored on your computer. If you want to do more, delete the cookies, but you will have to reset your homepage, passwords, etc if you do that.

More RAM would definitely be a good idea either way. Now-a-days anything under 128 is pretty much obsolete, and 128 isn't anything to brag about :)

You mentioned that it takes a long time to start up and log on? Do you have a desktop full of icons and shortcuts? Do you have lots of programs set to load on startup? Is the system tray full of lots of icons? These things all effect startup speed.

I personally have a blank desktop with minimal programs set to load on startup. I have all of my common programs set to shortcut key commands. (crtl+alt+i for IE ctrl+alt+w for word etc)

I used to think a clean desktop was the way to a fast computer too, now I'm not so sure. Each shortcut takes up a couple bytes, they're really no big deal.
What I do find (I do tech support) is that people who have cluttered desktops also have computers so full of crud they don't run for squat. The best thing most people can do for themselves is reinstall the OS once every year or two depending on how much garbage they install. Alternately don't install so much garbage. I'm sure everybody on this fine board already knows (smile, wink, wink) but you don't have to install the weatherbug when it pops up....

Hey theres a thought, how much stuff is running in the taskbar down by the clock?

Another thought, NT is a multi-user interface, do you have (accidentally I'm thinking) multiple users logged in at the same time?

PC magazine has free downloads of utilities that could get you back running again. Most of them are shareware that will give you a 30 day trial so you can test drive them first. I have an old PIII 866 machine at home that would not run at all and was constantly crashing. The CD drives also suddenly became disabled and the computer would no longer recognize them. I downloaded a PC booster program and got speed back and then got a utilities program that fixed my CD issues. Turned out that the registry was so screwed up the box was locked up. All is well now

NT has had some memory leaks in the past. Make sure that you are at the current service pack (6a I think). Also how much memory is in the thing? NT requires more memory than 98 or XP.

well no wonder! in reply to BUDD, 04-21-2005 08:47:03
What the heck are you doing with only 96mb of RAM? Cripes RAM is cheap, you've hamstrung the processor with so little memory. Put a minimum of 512Mb in there (probably less than $200) and you'll see a HUGE bump in speed. While you're at it wipe out NT and go to Windows 2000 SP4. Don't upgrade reformat and install it right, Win2k and XP are MUCH easier to install than the older versions, you'll see a big speed bump but you've got to have more RAM.

If, in fact, you are running Windows NTv4.0 (which would be about all that you could install with only 96MB of RAM) you would want to upgrade to (at least) SP 6a. The problem is that Microsoft no longer "officially" supports Windows NTv4.0.

You have a sufficient processor (at 1.79GHz) for a higher OS level (i.e. Windows XP or Windows 2000) but you will NEED to increase your system RAM... I'd recommend an absolute minimum of 256MB, but 1GB would be MUCH better.
Upgrade the memory, then the OS. The memory upgrade will be relatively inexpensive. The OS upgrade, on the other hand, may not be...
