Is it true if you fill around a wooden post with pea gravel that the post will not rot out as fast as if you put dirt around it?

Unless you have clay dirt, a few inches of gravel in the bottom of the post hole will allow any water seapage around the post to drain away from the post. You wouldn't want to fill the entire post hole with gravel, it wouldn't hold much.

Pea gravel will not set & grip the post very well. So it's not the best - mixed gravel or just the dirt would 'set' the post a lot better.

As for rotting, keeping the post dry will help. _IF_ you can get the water to drain _away_ from the post, then gravel or such will help it dry out & last a bit longer. If you have the typical heavy clay soil with lots of rain we have around here, the gravel will only be a place for the water to drain _to_ and sit & puddle, and will not make any difference at all from dirt to gravel to pea gravel.

So, you likely will get different answers to this question depending on the local soil types.

For me with my soil/ climate, it does not make a witt of difference, just a waste of money for the gravel.

The way I see it if you dig a hole and fill it with gravel that is where the water will go . You`d have to have a drain to keep the water out .

Pea gravel would be better in bottom of hole and then use CA-6 road pack to tamp in around post

If you keep the water drained away from the wood you will. If you just make a basin in heavy clay it won't help much.
