I got home from work this evening just in time to find "Jett" had run out in front of a neighbors car and got hit right in front of the house. He actually belonged to Ben, my room mates 9 year old son but he had taken a real liking to me and tended to stay with me over at the shop more than he stayed at home (I think he enjoyed terrorizing the shop cats more than anything). Lori had gotten him for Ben, as a puppy, about a year ago and I have to admit I didn't want another dog because I had just lost two of them, one 12 and another was nearly 14. But, being an dog lover at heart I ""grudgingly"" warmed up to him, mainly I think because he was so smart. Since she got him too small to be outside by himself he started out as an inside dog but decided on his own he preffered outside...when the weather was good...(we always joked he 'fair weather' dog) He was one of the smartest dogs I've known, he housebroke almost immediately and when he was outside he actually knocked on the door to let us know he wanted back in, where he picked that up I'll never know because it wasn't something he was taught. If he got hungry and there didn't happen to be food in the bowl at that particular time he'd knock the barrel over and get it himself, I didn't like that much but at least he was smart enough to be self sufficient.... I've had more than my share of outside dogs and none of them were ever smart enough to do that, they'd starve first. I can't explain it, he wasn't around but a year, and he wasn't really "my dog" but I think I got more attached to that mutt than I have any of the others I had for ten times as long. I just wish that as smart as he was along with all the disiplining I tried with him, etc, he had been smart enough to keep out of the road. I had been expecting this to happen because of that stupid streak of his, when it came to getting in the road, but it still doesn't make it any easier loosing him this way..... Thanks for the chance to vent here guys. I guess when you loose a pet that has become like a part of the family it helps to remember them the same way and think more about their life than their death. How many of ya'll have or have had pets that were part of the family like Jett had become?

sorry to hear of your loss. dogs are as different as people are different, when man and dog hook up and become pals it's just like hanging with your best, oldest friends. i've lost best friends from both species, and i've always taken the view that i was DAMN LUCKY to know them. carry on my friend. jeff.

I'm so sorry. The following touched me deeply and I hope it helps.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

That rainbow ridge story was cool!!!! Thanks!
I believe that they will meet us on the other side of this life...Not dead, just hunting in different pastures for the time being.

I was on a dog forum and someone had a story on there about the "Rainbow Bridge". They say its a place that all dogs go to when they pass away and thats its always nice out and they always have all the water and food they want, but they are waiting for the day when they see there owner(s) coming across the bridge to greet them. So I'm sure you will be with Jett again someday. Someone said the when Mark Twain was told that dogs don't go to heaven he said that he just wanted to go to where ever they went.

It says alot about a man the way he treats his pets. They don't call dogs man's best friend for nothing. I have yet to own a dog who I would call my buddy, but it is not for a lack of trying. I just always seem to wind up with dogs of low intelligence. I need a dog that has that extra "spark" to him, so I can feel like we understand one another. My two current dogs, a 14 year old beagle and a 5 year old Pug are great dogs, well behaved and well trained, and I will miss them when they are gone, but they are just not "one of a kind" dogs. Does that make sense? Sorry for your loss, but try to think of all the unwanted, unloved dogs there are in the world and be glad you gave this ol boy a good home and a good life. Now it is time to do the same favor for another.

Like many, I've had my share too. Probably the hardest thing I've had to do so far is take them in and put them to sleep when their health fails them. But then again, I'd never send any of them out on their own without being there to talk them through it, not one ever turned their back on me. Then bring them home and lay them out so that the others could come up and give them a curious smell and know that they're gone and not just disappeared before I bury them. It's a tough thing. I'm down to one lab, Lou now, and he's my buddy. When I get home from Illinois on Friday nights, straight into the truck and down to the store for a piece of meatloaf, then head out the window with ears flopping in the wind and snorting at the pigs, horses, and the others. That's my buddy, and when he's gone, no more. I don't see myself as going through putting another one to sleep again.

Sorry about your family's and your loss.

Mark

My thoughts go out to you for the loss of your friend. We sure get attached to these critters. I have lost several dogs, and cats to old age and accidents. in the past. You will never get a dog like buddy, but I am sure there is a dog out there, that needs a home, and would like to give it a try. Stan in calif.
