Hi Guys,

Just talked to the local Co-Op about fertilizer costs. My word, things have changed in the past 23 years!

30-60-10-10 at $32.25 an acre? Ouch!

Allan

Allan, When your are back at the Coop ask for the price of NH3/ton (Anhydrous Ammonia). Better be holding on to something or sitting down.
Later,

Like every thing else the price of nitrogen fertilizers are affected by energy prices because it is manufactured from natural gas.

On the other side of the fence the new-crop futures prices are up also.
Cotton is up 10%
Corn 26%
soybeans 43%
And rice 78%
or so I have read on our state ag center web site.

Don't worry, John, by harvest time, cooler heads will have prevailed and prices will have settled back to slightly under break even.

Hi John,

Yeah, all I want to do is sling a little phosphate to start some new alfalfa, not buy the derned field all over again. :>(

Although, I did tell him that the land was tired; noticed he threw a double dose at me and I really question that 30 pounds of N just to get baby alfalfa out of the ground.

Oh well, one step at a time. I'll get 'er turned around and breathin' on her own again. :>)

Howdy,

Shoot. You think that's bad. Dad and I figured up the cost increase on a JD combine from just back in the 60's when the JD 40, 45, and 55 were out and about. The cost increase was somewhere in the neighborhood of 3000%! Sure glad my farmin is only for fun and not for salary. But every time I think back to when grandad was livin I remember just why I'm still doin what I'm doin on that farm. God bless.

now factor in fuel costs prices the way they are. + farming has no"job benefits ie insurance retirement etc. once figured out i made less then 2 dollars an hour farming and that was figuring generiously by the time you figure plowing harvest fixing equimpment. really wonder how some of these guys afford new equipment.

Groan,

$48 per acre for seed, 36.25 fer fertilizer, fuel costs and free labor equals the first year's crop to just break even.

Hayin' is fun 'taint it? :>)

Break even? My... You're optimistic if nothing else....

Farming is a long-term investment... It takes a while to go broke.

Ya Allan, now days, you got to save up a long time to farm 320 acres and stay at it long enough to go broke. Like John says, it just ain't an overnight thing anymore. Harley
