Hi Guys,

Went and dug this old New Holland 495 swather out of the weeds today. Took 2 hours to get 'er pulled out (with a loader) and configured to tow. Whew! What a load on that old pickup. That thing is heavy! :>(

Anyway, after we got it moved, it took 'bout thirty minutes to swap 'er back the other way, hook it up and try 'er out. Everything works and really sounds quiet. Gotta find a cylinder, lube, grease, check it over real good and give 'er a test spin in the tall grass.

Yep, havin' fun now. :>)

Hi Mark,

That's it. I'm finding muscles that I didn't even know I had.

Stiff and sore this morning, but it sure feels good to get outta this computer chair and do some work for a change tho. :>)

Now, if I can just find a decent baler somewhere, I should be just about set to go.

That was quick.

Was going to rib you about your comments with respect to red part delivery delays on "using your tractor" board awhile ago.

Will do it anyway: So how is it you have time to fool around yakin on this site when you have a new farm to "whup" into shape? Time you climb out of that chair, it'll be too hot to work outside..... or maybe that's the plan....let the sore muscles recoup. Big Grin.

Funny about equipment; your comment about finding a baler. Seems I rubberneck and spot something I don't need quite frequently, but when I need something it seems I can never find it. Hope your luck is better.

Mark

Mark,

My problem is, I think I do thinks differently, plus the fact that I'm relyin' heavily on my memories.

I notice that almost everyone around here is using the belted balers. I also notice that they are waiting for what seems forever to start the baling process; the hay is so dry that it is almost white.

I still think I'm gonna try and find a good NH 855 chainer somewhere so I can bale when the hay is ready instead of it being completely bleached out.

Dunno, too many years with the milk cows, I guess.

Allan, that is a very nice looking machine, the reel is very straight. You don't find that often. I have pulled the ones I had with a 544 and a 460D plenty of power a little light though. the 460 did better than the 544. 756D and 706D worked much better. Ran in low 4 most of the time caught my boy in high 1 a few times. Do not try to truck it with the sicle bar side down hill because it will fall over on its nose. Now I told my Brother in Law this when he bought my last one but he had to find out for himself. I think you will like it. Don't for get to raise the jack when you truck it because it will stop the machine when it goes into the rolls. The foot won't go through them. Don't forget to turn the pivot wheel the first one I had had been broke off some time and weilded back on. If you haven't figered it out yet I have done all of this and more.

Hi Jimmy,

I didn't know about that wobble wheel pin and pushed/skidded it sideways 'bout a 100 yards when backing out of this gents yard. Good thing it had rained an inch at his place the night before last. I'd of busted it for sure.

I had to tow it about 23 miles across some of the steepest gravel roads in the state. Low and 2nd gear all the way and the thing sure wanted to push that little pickup around going downhill, that's for sure.

Thanks for your advice; I know I'll need some more help before I learn this machine.

Hi Dug,

Yes, that be the place. Already had a lot of the neighbors stop in and say "Howdy". They are all telling us what a "picture perfect farmstead" it was 40 years ago when the original owner had it.

All I know is that I gots lots of buildings and corrals to repair and paint and miles upon miles of trees to clean up.

Hope you got a manual along with that thing as it has alot of grease points and it loves to be greased. Thats the same head as on my SP1495 and weighs around 3600. Hope the rolls are good as they are about 800 each and take about a 3 days to change if its not rusty.
Check your wobble reels for end play. If theres to much a set of shims is about 10 bucks. Make sure the chain tensions are correct and your reels speed and drive belt is where you want it.
Make sure you catch the 4th grease fitting above & behind the sproket on the sickle wobble drive. Set your head float as near correct as possible. I think its about 70 lbs.
They can say what they may want but thats a good machine and you can cut 100 acres a day with it easy and it will do a job that is far better job and leave your hay in better condition than the best discbine built today. Good luck and happy cutt'in....

Traded for a 1495 this winter. (Selfpropelled version of yours), in like new condition. Those will really eat the hay. I worked for a farmer back in the early 80's that bought a new one of those. I hated having to move and change it around, but I saw that machine eat sudex higher than the ole 560 that was pulling it, and it took all that ole 560 had to pull it.

How wide is that? When I was little we had two of those and I think they were 12'. I remember everybody complaining about having to switch them over from transport to field position. Got rid of those and bought a discbine when they first came out. That 9' discbine could mow as much as both of those 12' haybines. We now have a 13' discbine and 180 horse eating hay like it is going out of style. Can't imagine using one of those things ever again.

Look at the bright side old buddy, it's still gotta be faster than using the alternative, that lawn mower in the back of the pickup. Hehehehehe, Harley
