Need fly control advice.

We live 1/3 mile from a large chicken/egg operation. 500,000 chickens I think. We have no livestock. Only two dogs.

I am looking for something that I can use to knock down the fly population outside when there is a bloom. We just had a bad period last week. I went out and bought one of these Fimco sprayers from TSC and sprayed the entire yard with Tempo 20 WP. We did not see great results.

We have used the trap-n-toss pots and the quick strike mats in the past and seem to have good results, but these things don’t even put a dent in the population when we have a problem. When we have a bloom, I can fill up fly strips in an hour. I have also used a fogger, but am not sure if I am really getting any results from that either.

I am looking for a safe insecticide that I can use to knock down the population. My wife is pregnant and we have two dogs so I am hesitant to use anything too nasty.

Also wondering if anyone has had any experience with Fly Predators. I believe flies may be breeding in our dog's fenced in area and was wondering if these little buggers would help.

Sorry for the O/T, but you guys give good advice

I feel for ya! Been fighting the flies on and around my place for years. Tried all sorts of things, most of which didn't really work.

Then we got guinea fowl. For the first time ever, we aren't covered in flies. They spend all day, every day, running around snapping up flies. They may be ugly and noisy, but they are a fly eating machine!

Make sure you don"t have screen doors where you enter & leave the building.... Flies will cluster on screen doors, and when you open the door, in they go!

I can't vouch for this working but in '99 the wife and I visited my relatives in the maritimes and my Uncle Beecher had a lot of house flies around his house. Over the front and back doors he had a brown paper bag bunched up into a shape of a wasp's nest. He said that the flies didn't go near the door area knowing that the wasps will sting them in full flight. How the flies know that I can't tell you, but there weren't any flies in his house. Give it a try and let us know if it works or not.

We had a plastic minnow bucket that walmart sold. Put a little water in it, couple inches, and a couple dead minnows. Cut them open a little and hang the bucket up. The flies enter the little holes and can't get out. Nasty but works.

Have you tried talking with the farm operators. Maybe they could give some good neighborly advice.

Talk to them a few times a year. They rent land from us.

Who do you think gave me the Tempo?

I would think next to an operation that large the stink would be a bigger problem ?

Actually no, very hi-tech operation . . . except for the flies.

Did you put in enough Tempo or did it rain afterwards? I use Tempo all the time and have nothing less than fantastic results.

I used a 15 gallon sprayer and did 15 gallons (60 teaspoons wp) and did all around the house and sprayed some spots on the house too. I also sprayed our front yard/field.

So in total I put 15 gallons on maybe 2.5 acres.

Maybe not enough? Also, I wonder if it has an expiration date. Stuff must be 2 years old.

We had 4 solid days of no rain afterwards and didn't see any great results.

Morning Joe My wife buys the fly predators Have had good luck with them. Only thing about them is you apply them to the manure pile as they lay their eggs in to the fly larve we have horses so that isnt a problem, but you have no livestock so I dont know they would work for you. you may be stuck with the catch bags and fly strips. Just had a hair-brained thought...

Get a load of manure and put the fly predators in that as a giant fly trap :)

Can't offer much advice but commisserate a bit. Our area used to be a big poultry area, and you'd see the fly blooms every so often. Can remember on house a good mile from the nearest manure pit and they did get thick sometimes!

Not the dumbest suggestion I ever heard.

Maybe I should sneak over to the coop and dump some on their pile . . . although I doubt they have one right now since they are generally very good about getting it the heck out of the area.
