Silly question...my neighbor purchsed a used (no manual) Deere LX173 / 15HP. After the oil drain, and new filter yesterday, he has no idea how many quarts of oil belong in the engine. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for the responses. We do appreciate the assistance. Looks like you folks have a legitimate tractor forum here. Honestly, our intent was not comedy...but we're glad it generated a few laughs, and help as wall. Thanks again -

Why not pour in a half quart at a time, and check the dipstick after adding each half quart? If it just has the fill plug, it will be full at the base of the plug, but most engines now have a dipstick, either on the fill plug, or separately. Took longer to type this than it would of to add and check 2 or 3 times.

how many did he drain out? most 15 h. p. engines take about 1-i/2 quarts.

Does it have a dipstick?
Has he talked to the local JD dealer?
